As much as fans love to sympathize with their favorite characters during all the roughest moments of their journey together, apparently it’s even more fun to poke fun at their misery instead.
Meme culture is wild and unpredictable and sometimes one man’s pain can be another man’s laugh. Here are some of the most famous game memes born out of the pain and suffering of some of the most beloved video game characters.

Right next to “fus ro dah” is “taking an arrow to the knee” is one of the most iconic memes from 2011. Skyrim. This meme grew out of the many guards in each hold of Skyrim. One of their many useless dialogues involves them mentioning “taking an arrow to the knee,” which ended up being a hilarious quote from the game that fans meme about all the time.
This seemingly widespread phenomenon of former adventurers being hit by a stray arrow and their lives reduced to mundane patrol routes is rather sad when you think about it. Yet apparently it is Skyrim community thought the story was the main meme material.
7 Humanoid (Roblox): “OOF”
Every death of a Roblox Humanoid character results in a sound that no one could have predicted would become so popular. The “oof” sound effect, which is part of both meme videos and soundtrack remixes, is one of the most widely used sound effects on the internet. The simple audio clip is so iconic and widespread that it has reached an audience outside the gaming community.
Arm Roblox characters essentially make the internet laugh at their deaths. However, as of July 2022, the famous “oof” has been officially replaced. Hopefully, the afflicted one Roblox citizens can now finally rest assured.
6 Ethan Winters (Resident Evil 7-8): Lend Ethan a hand
Ethan’s introduction to the series was a big deal for Resident Evil fans, but eventually the fandom warmed up to the newest protagonist, and for his great welcome, fans prepared a bunch of memes at his expense. One of the greatest running gags anywhere Resident Evil 7 and 8 is the poor, bad state of Ethan’s hands.
Ethan’s ability to regenerate/reattach his limbs is an important part of the story, so of course the game’s story needs a handful (no pun intended) opportunities for Ethan to show off his fungus-based powers . Since then, poor Ethan’s hand trauma has turned into the butt of many jokes within the… REGARDING community. At least Ethan can still grab his hands after giving everyone a good laugh!
5 Paimon (Genshin Impact): Emergency Food
Poor Paimon doesn’t seem to be able to take a break. Genshin impact‘s iconic mascot immediately made a pretty strong first impression thanks to a single line of dialogue that the player can choose early in the game. At some point, the player can choose to make a joke, introduce Paimon as their “emergency food” and from then on, the Genshin fandom had born their very first meme.
Since that famous rule, Paimon has been subjected to a lot of (playful) bullying and is the star of a handful of food-related memes. Tons of delicious food can be found all over Teyvat, the Traveler certainly doesn’t have to resort to something so horrific!
4 Ethan Mars (Heavy Rain): Press X to Jason
Usually it would be bad taste to ridicule a poor panicked man who has just lost sight of his son in the middle of a busy shopping center. However, when it comes to Ethan Mars from Heavy rainthe internet didn’t bother to hold back.
The game begins with Ethan at the mall for a fun family day out, but things go wrong when his son Jason sets off on his own. While the actual situation wasn’t funny, it was the “X to Jason” prompt that made the perfect meme material. Not only that, but the distressed delivery of Ethan’s desperate cries for his son made spamming the button that much more hilarious.
3 The Chosen Undead (Dark Souls): YOU Died
the holder dark souls The “You Died” ending screen is so incredibly embedded in internet meme culture that it has probably reached an audience that doesn’t even know where the meme came from! In any hilarious video, video game related or not, a quick fade to black wouldn’t be a complete ending without the deep chimes of the dark souls game over screen.
Watch just about any funny video of a cute animal attacking the camera or someone falling on their face completely drunk and chances are they’ll end up with the dark souls end screen. Hopefully the meme doesn’t cause a long time dark souls fans get horrific flashbacks to frustrating boss fights.
2 Jack Mitchell (Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare): Press F to show respect
It’s important to note that this meme had absolutely nothing to do with the actual circumstances and everything to do with the barrier video games still face when it comes to achieving a full level of immersion. In one of the early scenes in Call Of Duty: Advanced WarfareJack Mitchell attends his best friend’s funeral. As the cutscene progresses, the player is given a moment to walk over to the chest and a silly prompt comes up that breaks any sympathy the player might have just had.
Since then, poor Jack’s grief has turned into a meme, with comments or chats spamming “f” when they want to express their compassionate greetings.
Kaz’s infamous monologue ‘just to suffer’ in Metal Gear Solid 5 was an incredibly touching and heartbreaking moment for him… only for the internet to come in and make a joke of it. When poor Kaz delivered that speech, he had just been rescued from captivity where both his arm and leg were cut off. He goes on to talk about being able to feel his phantom limbs and the pain of his fallen comrades. For many MGS fans, it was hard to see Master Miller in the broken state he was in.
Since then, Kaz’s iconic line has been used countless times to express any kind of trivial frustration. At least Kaz was able to really put the Diamond Dogs on the map!
