The latest addition to Pokemon’s mobile games roster is The Pokemon Trading Card Game. The game is now available for the Canadian Regional Server Test. For those who are not used to the basics of the physical card game, we have a Beginner’s Guide to which you can refer. In this section, we’ll discuss how to use the Trainer Cards more effectively in the Pokemon TCG Live game. The Trainer Cards to many perhaps as unnecessary additions to the game, but they are the real orchestrators of a card fight. Read our previous articles about this game to know the basics of this game. For now, let’s get started.
Typing all trainer cards in Pokemon TCG Live
As mentioned, this guide would focus solely on the trainer cards available in the game. There are three types of trainer cards available in the game. All three types have their own utility, advantages and disadvantages. In addition, each category of Trainer cards can be of different varieties. Therefore, not all maps are covered by our guide, but still we would cover all the necessary details for the initial stage.
Item card
The most basic type Trainer Cards, which goes well with Pokemon cards. One may associate as many item cards with their Pokemon before they attack. It is very important to read with patience what is on each item card in order to plan the strategies accordingly.
A Pokemon tool card is a special type of item card, which, when attached to a Pokemon, stays with it until the end of the game, increasing their powers accordingly. When the Pokemon is knocked out, the tool card goes along with the discard pile.

Supporter cards
Named after characters from the anime, they are very powerful types of Trainer Cards. Players are allowed to play alone 1 Supporter card per turn. Some Supporter Cards are useful if you want to create problems for the opposition. Some also benefit the user immensely.
Stadium tickets
Stadium cards are the ones that affect the playing field and affect both the players. Nothing but 1 Stadium ticket can be placed at a time. Once placed, it remains until the end of the game, until another Stadium card replaces it. Most stadium cards benefit both the users, depending on the situation.
How to Use the Trainer Cards Effectively in Pokemon TCG Live
First and foremost, get rid of the idea that Trainer Cards don’t make sense. Many beginners tend to fill their decks with only Pokemon and Energy Cards. A perfect and relevant collection of Trainer cards in the deck can win a match for you. Therefore, read the next part to the end.
- When creating the deck, choose only the relevant Trainer cards. If your strategy is to stack that many energy cards and link them to your attacker and hit a multiplication move at your opponent, choose Trainer cards that can take energy cards from the stock and discard the stock.
- If the strategy is to have a lot of base Pokemon in the bank, then choose Trainer cards that support that specific goal.
- Also remember that Stadium cards affect both players. So if you play a Stadium card from your hand that can benefit your opponent more than you, try to avoid those Stadium cards.
The following subsection provides a systematic analysis of the use of each type of trainer card. Please read to the very end.
Using the item cards
There are a huge number of cards available in the game. Therefore, we would use the decks already provided in the beginner game as a reference. Now let’s take a look at The Rapid Strike Malamar Deck in the game. This deck requires the maximum amount Rapid Strike Cards at hand. Therefore, choose item cards accordingly.
Also the Blissey V-deck requires the maximum number of energy cards to be attached to Blissey, which is why Energy finder item cards are useful. Now Blissey V’s HP is already high, hence Cape of Toughness and Potion Item Cards would further increase the HP and heal the Pokemon.

Another very important type of item card is the Pokemon Gatherer. Items like Great Ball and Basic Ball are great for drawing Pokemon cards from the deck. Keep in mind that you can use as many item cards as you want on a given move. When starting a turn, play the damage repair cards first. Then play the Energy draw cards (if any) to get better options for Energy cards than the cards at hand.
You can only link 1 Pokemon Tool to a Pokemon, so be careful which one you choose. If you can’t place the active Pokemon you want, choose the Air Balloon Item card, which lowers the Pokemon’s Retreat cost. Using item cards that require a coin toss may be a bit risky and dependent on luck, but can be very beneficial in the end.
Using the supporter cards
Supporter cards can only be used once per turn. Therefore, play them accordingly. Most Supporter Cards are about drawing cards from the deck. Supporters that make you discard your hand and draw cards from the deck are very helpful. They are especially useful if you don’t have a good hand with cards. If you have very few (1-2) cards, including that card, use it immediately.
The more cards you have in your hand, the better. The Professor cards (such as Magnolia, Oak, Birch, Rowan, etc. are these types of cards). However, only use them when you need to, just don’t use them because you have them in your hand. If you do this, you may lose the decent cards from your hand.

The boss’s order cards also help you switch between your opponent’s benched and active Pokemon. In addition, whichever supporter card you choose to take, don’t forget to read the instructions on the cards carefully and always play them at the ultimate point of your turn.
Selection and perfect use of stadium cards
The stadium cards affect both players. If you don’t have any cards to remove Stadium cards, try to avoid them. It is also highly recommended that you do not have many Stadium cards in the deck. 1-2 usually does the job. Try to predict your opponent’s strategy and play Stadium cards accordingly.

Make sure your opponent doesn’t take full advantage of a Stadium card you actually played. If someone has one-dimensional tactics, stadium cards can be useful to someone. For example, if someone wants to attack and only has Grass-type Pokemon in their deck, a stadium like Turrfield can be of benefit to the player. However, the opponent, who has less chance of grass species, does not benefit from it.
