Did Sony make a big mistake? (photo: Sony)
One reader is frustrated by Sony’s decision to lower the price of the PS5 and thinks the Xbox is the turning point of their rivalry.
When people look back on this generation and see where Sony went wrong, they will continue with the price hike announced this week. As the cost of living rises, it is difficult for an entrepreneur to think that the above price of his luxury goods would be the best solution. People cannot live without heating; they can’t live without a PlayStation 5. Especially when there’s a cheaper option desperately trying to take over.
I don’t know a fanboy, but Microsoft has to grin at their hands at the thought of Sony being forced to pay a higher price as they announced they wouldn’t follow suit. Microsoft is rich enough to achieve their goal, but Nintendo said they won’t raise their prices and they are smaller than Sony.
The worst part is that US prices have not increased. Does this mean the rest of the world is paying to keep their prices low? If everyone had had a price increase, would it have been smaller overall because it would have been more spread out? It would have been, but of course Sony will never admit it.
Sony has been really hyped for years, decades as a marketing genius, non-reflective to the gaming industry, so that even if they screw up like the PlayStation 3, they still look like the classy one. But partly because Microsoft always seemed to be seen as a loud, blunt American newcomer, which is very different this year, its Sony that seems like an empty-label guy.
Not only did they talk wrong, they turned out to be so unhappy that they hated talking to their fans. That and the way they promoted the PS Plus revamp make it seem like they were forced to do and didn’t want to talk about, like a kid with his chores. Everything, as well as the price hike, is announced via a few minor PlayStation blog updates that try to get rid of it with the least amount of money possible.
Microsoft has Phil Spencer and Nintendo has Miyamoto and all the other developers, but Sony has no public face. Only Jim Ryan, a poor public speaker but who seems to be behind most of these changes. Maybe Sony didn’t start acting like that until it took over.
We’ve seen all the new game videos for god of war Ragnarok for 11 months but still slammed for three months. And that’s their big game this year. We haven’t seen any gameplay footage for Spider-Man 2 or Wolverine…. these are literally all the games we know they make. They must have more, but they’re not ashamed to tell us about them. Again, even Nintendo isn’t that bad.
All they want to discuss is PlayStation VR2. VR headsets will almost certainly be 400ml. In the midst of the financial crisis, just after a price increase, we continue with that situation. I mean, they didn’t know what the situation would be when they started making the headset, but then they knew when they started saying they were excited about it.
This went beyond Sony’s arrogance and turned into something more dangerous for them. They seem totally sick and not only do they not have a clear game plan, but they also don’t realize they have no idea how to play a game. If they don’t realize there’s a real possibility that the PlayStation 5’s Christmas price hike will make the Xbox Series X/S look more attractive, that’s a bad idea.
Sure, they might have made a little less money without the price cut, but at least they wouldn’t have been exposed for being bad for sand and dangerously self-destructive. I’m really worried that they’ve completely lost it and this is the beginning of the end.
