Sony and Naughty Dog are gearing up for the third release for The Last of Us, but this time it comes out under a slightly different name: The Last of Us: Part 1. And it’s coming soon. Very fast. If you’re a fan of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic tale of tragedy, sacrifice, and human excesses, you’re bound to want as much detail as possible. Like the release date of the game. And what time does The Last of Us: Part 1 come out on PlayStation Store? What’s the price? How much hard drive space do you have to sacrifice for Joel and Ellie? All very valid questions and you will find the answers here.

DUALSHOCKERS VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Last of Us: Part 1 Release Date

If the numerous announcements and trailers haven’t made it clear yet, The Last of Us: Part 1 will be released on September 2, 2022. Grab your calendar and make a note. And if you’re planning to pick up a sick person from work or school, start laying the groundwork now with the comments about headaches/backaches/toeaches. Preparation is key.

What time will The Last of Us: Part 1 be unlocked?

Then, what time can you play? What time will the digital version be unlocked? If you’ve pre-ordered a physical copy of the game, you’ll be able to start playing once you’ve ripped the cellophane wrapping off the game’s box and installed the game on your console. If you’re lucky, you might even get it delivered in the mail a day or two early.

If you’ve decided to go all-digital for your games, you’ll have to wait for Sony to unlock the game from the end. You can pre-download the game on your console, but you won’t be able to play until the game is officially unlocked.

Here are the unlock times for The Last of Us: Part 1, according to the official PlayStation Store:

  • United Kingdom: 12 AM BST (midnight)
  • Mainland Europe: 01:00 CEST
  • North America: 23:00 CDT

How much hard drive space does it take?

Another essential piece of information to know is how much hard drive space The Last of Us: Part 1 needs on PS5. Since the stock SSD in the PS5 can fill up very quickly with just a few bloated games, it might be a good idea to free up some space. The Last of Us: Part 1 takes up 68GB of space on PS5, but that doesn’t take into account any future updates that Naughty Dog may release. If there are any updates, they are unlikely to be obscene in size if they are just the normal array of bug fixes and tweaks.

If you pre-ordered the digital edition of The Last of Us: Part 1, you can go ahead and download the game already as the pre-load is live. You can’t play, but you can see the countdown ticking to the impending release.

Unfortunately, pre-loading is the only benefit you get when you pre-order the game. If you want some extra in-game bonuses, you should buy the more expensive Digital Deluxe Edition. Here’s what you get in the Digital Deluxe Edition:

  • Two skill upgrades (early unlock)
  • Pistol/Rifle Upgrade (Early Unlock)
  • Explosive Arrows (Early Unlock)
  • Dither Punk filter (early unlock)
  • Speedrun Mode (Early Unlock)
  • Six weapon skins (early unlock)

How much is it?

Prices. The big question when The Last of Us: Part 1 was announced was “What will it cost?” Unfortunately, there is no upgrade path from the previous versions of the game, which makes sense because it’s not a port, it’s a remake. It’s essentially a new game made on a newer version of Naughty Dog’s game engine. So, what will it cost? Brace yourself…

The regular version of the game costs £69.99 / $69.99 / €79.99. The Digital Deluxe Edition costs £79.99 / $79.99 / €89.99. These are the prices listed on the official PlayStation Store pages, but if you shop around for the physical release, you’ll no doubt find some retailers with slightly lower prices or promotional offers.

When will reviews be available?

Given the cost, you might be waiting for a few reviews before shelling out the cash, so when will the embargo on The Last of Us: Part 1 reviews be lifted? From August 31 you can read and view impressions and reviews (including ours). The timing for the embargo is as follows:

  • United Kingdom: 4pm BST
  • Mainland Europe: 5:00 PM CEST
  • North America: 10am CDT

The Last of Us: Part 1 is a complete rebuild of Naughty Dog’s epic, and while it’s a faithful remake with lots of gameplay and graphics improvements, it’s not quite the complete package. Unfortunately, Factions’ surprisingly good multiplayer mode doesn’t make the jump to PS5. However, you can still get your fix with the PS4 re-release, The Last of Us Remastered. The multiplayer still runs on PS4 (playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility) and still has a decent player base.

What you get is the Left Behind DLC, a short but fun backstory chapter for Ellie in a moving story set before the events of the main game.

And that’s about all you need to know about The Last of Us: Part 1. All you have to do now is wait. I see you on the other side survivor.
