Wano Country is one of the most important places in the A piece world and is of great significance to the overarching plot of the story. Since it was already mentioned in the Thriller Bark arc, it would always be a land of immense significance, especially considering that this place was described as the land of the samurai. Thriller Bark introduced fans to characters like Ryuma, Oars and Gecko Moria, all of whom were closely associated with the land of Wano, which fans got to experience well after the timeskip of A piece.

After the arrival of the Straw Hat Pirates in the New World, everything they did centered on this arc. As with most historical places in A pieceWano also had great significance when it comes to revealing the true history of the world and uncovering the secrets of the Void Century. A piece chapter 1055 finally gave the fans much more information about the real Wano land of the ancient and its actual history.

The Wano land of the past

When the Straw Hat Pirates entered the land of Wano, it was quite obvious that the geography of the place was rather strange. While in a world as diverse and rich as that of A piece it shouldn’t be much of a surprise, it shocked the crew anyway. Nami mentioned the presence of a barrier around the land, along with a waterfall that giant carp had to climb to enter the land. At the same time, Sanji mentioned fresh water flowing from the top of the waterfall as that is the only way Koi fish would swim in it. To make things even more interesting, the country of Wano itself consists of several islands, all of which have different seasons. For example, Ringo is a winter island, while Hakumai seems to be constantly in the fall. It is clear that the weather and seasons of Wano Country differ drastically.

In A piece 1055 fans finally got an answer as to why that is the case. Thanks to Kozuki Sukiyaki, fans found out that the Wano country they saw throughout the arc was not the real country at all. Deep beneath Orochi’s castle lay a trail that took Law, Robin and the fans on a journey through time to the land of Wano 800 years ago. This ancient Wano land has been flooded, but is very well preserved even today. According to Sukiyaki, Wano once existed at sea level, like most other places in the A piece world. Most likely, it also did not consist of several islands.

However, at some point, barriers were erected across the country to protect it from something. While it was not revealed why that was the case, it is most likely due to the growing influence of the 20 kings who were at war with the old kingdom at the time. Once the barriers around Wano were erected, the rainwater collected inside and flooded the ancient land. Halfway up Mount Fuji, a new land was created and as the water overflowed, the waterfalls of Wano Country were also created. Naturally, people fled from the old land of Wano and settled in the new land they created above.

The ancient weapon Pluton

As Kozuki Sukiyaki mentioned, the reason why barriers were erected around the land of Wano is not yet known. However, it was not just to defend the country against the growing influence of the 20 kings. In fact, it was probably something much deeper. Fans know that on Water 7, the ancient weapon Pluton was made long ago by the shipbuilders. This weapon was used during the Void Century, but has been dormant ever since. In the land of Wano, it was finally revealed that the Pluton lay at rest in the land of Wano.

It is very likely that after the Old Kingdom started losing the war against the 20 kings, they decided to keep the weapon safe in Wano, deep underground. As such, the barriers erected around the land protected not only the land, but also Pluton. This is why opening the borders of Wano Country is of great importance in the A piece story. While many thought this act was metaphorical, opening Wano’s borders is a literal act – one that destroys the barrier around it and re-releases the ancient weapon Pluton.

The future of Wano

Wano was always very important in the overarching plot of A piece and that remains the case even after the arc is closed. The borders of the country are not yet open and Dawn has not come to the country yet. Wano clearly has a much bigger role to play in the future and all eyes are on the Final War of the story that has plagued Oda so much. With a Momonosuke-caliber Shogun, Wano is sure to enter the Final War when Luffy takes action against the World Government and wants to crush them once and for all. Around that time, fans will likely see Wano’s borders opened up with Zunesha’s help and the ancient weapon Pluton unleashed on the world.

It is also very likely that Momonosuke himself is somehow tied to the Pluton and that he is the only one who can lead it into battle, given his strange ability to communicate with Zunesha. With that, the Minks and the Samurai of Wano will be heavily involved in One Piece’s final war. After the opening of the borders, the old land, made up of several islands, probably created by the “Continent Puller” Oars, will crumble. Wano will definitely return to sea level like the days of yore.
