Digimon partners have been a staple of video games based on the IP since the first Digimon World game, but depending on the title you watch, they haven’t always been comparable to the Digimon partners seen in the various anime. series.
However, the visual novel and strategy JRPG Digimon Survive pre-assigned Digimon partners for each human character and is written as if it were an anime series – albeit much darker than what most Digimon fans are used to. Each Digimon partner has their own characteristics, personalities, skills and more, but some are still better than others because of these factors.
SPOILER WARNING: This article contains important story spoilers for Digimon Survive.
11 Garurumon
Garurumon, who was a Gabumon during the prologue scene of the game, is Professor Haru’s partner. However, this is not revealed for a long time, as the professor has only vague memories of his short time in the digital world.
For most of the game, Garurumon is a minor antagonist who dislikes humans but is more disgusted by other Digimon partners and sees them as traitors. Nor does he care about the Master’s followers. After a while, Garurumon’s tough act gets annoying, and if he doesn’t reformat at some point, it wouldn’t hurt to see him devoured by the fog.
10 Renamon
Renamon, who appears during the prologue and apparently only disappears later, is Miyuki’s partner. For most of the game, he’s disguised as Miyuki’s brother Haru, though it takes a while for the professor to realize how similar Haru looks to him fifty years earlier.
As the evil entity known as The Master tears his partner’s soul in half, Renamon is committed to saving her – even if that means sacrificing other human children to do it. Renamon is somewhat misled, but he eventually comes around and is at least less annoying than Garurumon.
9 Fanglongmon
Fanglongmon, also known as Huanglongmon, is Haruchika’s partner and is only encountered in the real ending of the game. Fanglongmon, or rather his new Ruin Mode form, serves as the final boss of the game in the real ending. This is after they separated from his partner, as they had been a mysterious entity known as the Master for a thousand years.
While it’s nice for Fanglongmon to be reshaped, due to previously established knowledge, it doesn’t make sense for him to be anyone’s partner. It also doesn’t make sense that the four Digimon sovereigns sealed him up, as he is the DNA digitized form of all four.
8 Falcon
Falcomon is Minoru’s partner and for some reason has a different design than Falcomon from 2006 – despite some of the same digivolutions. Falcomon and Minoru start their relationship off well, but at some point Minoru has doubts about Falcomon and the other Digimon partners.
During this time, Falconon has his own fears and doubts about potentially harming his partner if something goes wrong. While it’s somewhat understandable for Falcomon to have that fear, because of his positive relationship with his partner, it comes across as irrational. In any case, the drama is only temporary, if stretched unnecessarily.
7 Dracmon
Dracmon is Kaito’s partner and offers a more relaxed demeanor to counter Kaito’s more serious tone, though they otherwise have similar personalities. It can be hard to get used to how Kaito and Dracmon talk to each other because of their brashness, but it’s not a problem once you understand that this is the way they show affection.
In some story paths, Dracmon even reluctantly tries to help Kaito with his revenge in both worlds. Dracmon does this by permanently Digivolving DNA with antagonist Piedmon to become Boltboutamon, essentially giving up his individuality to help his partner achieve his destructive goals.
6 Syakamon
Syakomon is Miu’s partner and is honest and outspoken, never afraid to tell her partner how she feels about a situation – even if they don’t agree. She will also do anything to protect Miu and would never leave her, especially in dangerous situations.
From the scene where they were first introduced, it’s easy to see that Miu and Syakomon became fast friends, perhaps just as fast as Takuma and Agumon. Syakomon also helps Miu cope with her growing maturity and independence, and she understands that she doesn’t want her brother to feel like he has to protect her all the time.
5 Floramon
Floramon is Saki’s partner and they get along well as they both have equally cheerful personalities. Although Saki usually says what she thinks, her feelings can sometimes overwhelm her and worry her. Nevertheless, Floramon is always by her side to encourage her to work things out.
Because Floramon and Saki are always together and talk constantly, Floramon knows her partner well relatively early. She can easily understand her feelings even if they are unclear to other characters. Floramon’s digivolutions are great too, as they’re all strange looking Digimon plants that Saki doesn’t know what to think of at first. Yet she still appreciates Floramon.
4 labramon
Labramon is Aoi’s partner, and like the animal she is based on, she is very devoted and affectionate towards her. She also has an energetic personality to match Aoi’s more humble demeanor. You would think this would cause problems, but on the contrary, they have one of the most positive relationships in the game and always take care of each other.
Since Aoi essentially becomes the caretaker of the group, treating everyone’s injuries and ensuring they are fed while trapped in the digital world, Labramon doesn’t mind helping Aoi with her duties. However, she always tells her not to overwork herself when she is tired.
3 Kunemon
Kunemon is a classic Digimon that has had some minor roles in the past but never made a major role until Digimon Survive. To some, Kunemon may seem annoying because he can’t talk, instead just saying “kew” when trying to communicate, but he’s still relatively expressive for an insect monster.
Despite his lack of speech, he always tries to help when he thinks he can, making him easier to appreciate. There are also some comedic moments when he digivolts, from fighting distinctly weaker Digimon to being able to speak temporarily. All of this just heightens Kunemon’s sympathy factor even more.
2 Lopmon
Lopmon is Shuuji’s partner and is treated like garbage by Shuuji for about half of the game due to his own problems. Despite this, Lopmon always does his best to help Shuuji, even if he is constantly mistreated.
Lopmon is a bit timid, but that should not be confused with weakness. When he sets his mind to it, he can call on his inner strength and digivolve into more powerful forms, just like the others. While the real end path berates Ryo Shuuji, other paths have Lopmon dark digivolving and devouring Shuuji. Either way, Shuuji learns his lesson, even though one way is harder than the other.
1 Agumon
If he had more time to grow, Lopmon would be in first place if he gave his best. However, due to the amount of screen time Agumon gets as Takuma’s partner, he takes the cake instead. He is also probably the only Digimon in the game that most fans are familiar with, as he is Tai Kamiya’s partner in Digimon Adventure and the mascot for most of the franchise.
Agumon from Digimon Survive is still naive, but in a charming way. He always stands behind Takuma and does his best to cheer everyone up when they’re feeling down – even if he doesn’t always fully understand the situation.
