Which Razer Mice Are Best?
In addition to a sturdy keyboard, a good quality mouse can make all the difference in PC video games. From customizable weights and knobs to brightly colored trims and software, it’s critical to find the right balance.
Razer has been in the computer peripheral industry since 1998 and knows how important the right tools can be to attack your enemies online. Therefore, the logo resembles the African tree snake and most products are named after predatory or poisonous animals.
For example, the mice are named after snakes like the viper, viper, and mamba, while Razer keyboards take arachnid names and console accessories take cat names. But before you settle for the perfect predatory mouse, there are a few things to consider.
Wired vs. Wireless
A mouse connects to a device using one of two methods, each of which is better suited for different activities.
Wired mouse: This type of connection is most commonly used by gamers because there is no input lag, it does not require charging, and often has a faster response time. Other than the limitations of the cable, there are not many drawbacks as it is also perfect for general office work and browsing.
Wireless mouse: A mouse without wires is perfect for people who work in different locations. It is easy to pick up and take off before putting it in your bag. However, a wireless mouse needs to be charged and the sensitivity is not as accurate as a wired mouse. It is not commonly used by gamers as there is a possibility of losing a Bluetooth connection or an input lag.
Programmable Buttons
Mouse design has come a long way since the two-button variants of 20 or 30 years ago. Modern computer peripherals not only have more buttons, but they are also often customizable. While the standard left, right, and center buttons work the same way, some Razer models have additional buttons on either side.
They have no practical use in office work or surfing the web, but they are extremely useful when playing fast-paced games. The buttons are programmed to trigger a sequence of keyboard presses that would otherwise be difficult for the gamer.
For example, if you play a huge online battle arena title, the character will have a variety of skills and actions. Where normally three buttons are required (and looking down on the keyboard), this can be done with a single button without looking away.
Some Razer mice take it a step further, letting you swap out the entire extra button panel. It snaps out easily, allowing you to instantly choose to add 12, seven, or two additional buttons.
Points per inch
It’s easy to assume that a mouse is just a mouse and they all work the same. While that’s largely true, there are subtle differences that can have a huge impact on gaming. One of these metrics is sensitivity, measured and indicated as dots per inch.
DPI determines how far (or how many pixels) the mouse cursor will travel across the screen when your hand moves the physical mouse one inch. For example, if the mouse has a maximum DPI of 400, that means the cursor will move 400 pixels for every inch moved.
Essentially, it’s a fancy term for mouse sensitivity. The higher the DPI, the more sensitive the cursor is to move. A lower DPI makes for a less sensitive mouse. There is no right or wrong DPI, as cursor travel time usually comes down to personal preference. But that said, almost all mice are capable of variable DPI, with maximum DPI being the most important.
Weighted for comfort
Everyone’s mouse grip is different and sometimes a comfortable mouse feels too light or too heavy for another. That’s where extra weights come in handy. Some of the most popular mice weigh between 3.1 ounces and 4.2 ounces, but these little metal pieces can add in 0.10 ounce, 0.17 ounce and 0.15 ounce increments. There are usually two stretches per step so you can get a perfect balance.
A lighter mouse is easier to move, but not always as accurate. On the other hand, a weighted mouse requires more “effort” to operate, but has excellent precision.
