Code Geass is an anime that tells the story of a young man who decided to rebel against the hierarchy of his royal family and avenge his mother, who he suspects died at the hands of the imperial family. Lelouch vi Britannia was a former prince of the Imperial family, but was exiled to Japan after interrogating his father, the Emperor, about his mother’s death.
Years after his exile, Lelouch was given a skill called geass. A force that compels people to carry out any command of Lelouch, as long as they look him in the eye. Using this power, Lelouch led a revolt against the Empire under the guise of justice and equality, hiding his primary motives from his comrades. Unfortunately, despite posing as a beacon of hope, the former prince was fond of methods that endangered the lives of many innocents and those of his allies. Here are some of the most horrific acts Lelouch committed in the entire story.
10 Exploitation of the Japanese Liberation Front
Prior to the rise of the Order of the Black Knights – the main organization created by Lelouch to take action against the Empire, there was a group made up of former Japanese soldiers called the Japanese Liberation Front. They served as the main opposition to the British military in Japan, now called Area 11.
Determined to use everything at his disposal in his fight against the British army, Lelouch took advantage of the protracted battle between them and the front. On two separate occasions, prominent members of the group were even murdered and both incidents painted as suicides.
9 Order Suzaku To Live
Kururugi Suzaku was a childhood friend of Lelouch, known since the early days in exile. He became a British soldier despite being the son of the former prime minister of Japan because of his extremely idealistic principles. He often takes on Lelouch, although he is unaware of this, as Lelouch usually operates behind a mask as Zero.
During one of their battles, where both are in danger of being destroyed at the hands of the second Prince Schneizel. Suzaku was given the task of holding Lelouch in place while they would be bombarded with relentless cannon fire. In a desperate attempt to escape, Lelouch uses his Geass on Suzaku and orders him to live. This order shattered Suzaku, as it broke his unnatural distance from life that was crucial to realizing his ideals, causing him much pain and suffering for the rest of the story.
8 kill clovis
Clovis la Britannia was the third prince of the Imperial family and the viceroy of Area 11. Despite his severe discrimination against the Japanese, now known as Elevens, he was found to have been relatively fond of those he considered family, one of which was to Lelouch to be yourself.
Shortly after receiving his Geass and leading a group of rebels against Clovis’ personal unit, Lelouch confronts the Viceroy and uses the Geass to ask him about the truth behind his mother’s death at gunpoint. Despite Clovis’s uninformed reactions and countless pleas for mercy, Lelouch kills him and kills his half-brother in cold blood.
7 Leaving the Black Knights during the Black Rebellion
The Black Rebellion was the first major attempt to return the Japanese to power in Area 11. Lelouch led the operation and it was the largest offensive move he had led to date. He had won the trust and respect of his comrades, who followed him into battle with an undying confidence in his leadership. At the height of the battle, however, Lelouch was nowhere to be seen.
After learning that Nunnally has been kidnapped from CC, Lelouch heartlessly delegates his responsibilities to Tohdoh and sets out to find his sister. This action led to mass confusion and uncontrollable panic within the ranks of the Black Knights, with his abandonment eventually leading to the defeat and imprisonment of most of his comrades.
6 cheating role
After being captured by Suzaku and his memories rewritten by the Emperor, Lelouch had to forget about Nunnally’s existence, with a boy named Rolo hired to act as his new younger sibling. Rolo had an additional role of executing Lelouch if his memories ever returned, but was unable to do so after a newly revived Lelouch persuaded him to believe their relationship as brothers was real.
After Rolo’s recruiting into the Black Knights and the murder of Shirley Fenette, Lelouch decides to kill Rolo. In multiple scenes, Lelouch is seen maniacally yearning for the death of Rolo while maintaining the facade of a loving brother. His wish finally comes true when Rolo sacrifices himself, overuses his Geass’ ability to freeze others in time, and saves Lelouch from disobedient members of the Black Knights.
5 killing Euphemia
To create an environment in which Britannians and Elevens can communicate with each other without the presence of discrimination, Third Princess Euphemia vi Britannia announced the creation of an area called the Special Administrative Zone of Japan. It was an idea welcomed by many Elevens and a move that would also serve to reduce support for rebels fighting to reclaim their land.
Lelouch attends the opening ceremony and plans to have Euphemia shoot him to maintain the status of the Black Knights. However, despite her conviction and his eventual obedience, Lelouch inadvertently uses his Geass to force Euphemia to kill all the Elves present. Lelouch then tracks her down and kills her, portraying her as an enemy of the Japanese.
4 Holding the representatives of the UFN hostage
After eliminating the Emperor, Charles zi Britannia, Lelouch took the throne and used his Geass on various members of the Imperial family to gain their support. Shortly after, Lelouch moved on to his next big target; The United Federation of Nations, a multi-territory alliance formed to fight Britannia.
Lelouch’s request to join the UFN was met with skepticism, as the organization’s leader, Kaguya Sumeragi, pointed out that Britannia’s involvement would automatically land them a dictatorship due to the empire’s vast population. Not only does Lelouch reject Kaguya’s terms to secure the right to vote, but he also orders Suzaku, now under his command, to infiltrate the location and take all the representatives of their respective territories hostage until they accept his proposal.
3 Threatens to launch the FLEIJA against anyone who opposes its rule
In the midst of the UFN incident, Lelouch receives word of the destruction of the Imperial capital Pendragon. It was caused by the FLEIJA, a weapon of mass destruction capable of wiping out huge cities with a single blow. However, the attack was carried out by none other than the second prince, Schneizel el Britannia.
In response to Schneizel’s attack on the capital, Lelouch mobilizes his army, places himself on the front lines and leads them against his brother in an attempt to subdue him permanently. After an intense battle and using an extremely clever tactic, Lelouch infiltrates Schneizel’s warship and uses Geass on him to enforce absolute obedience, before taking over the multiple FLEIJAs on the ship and pointing them out to the rest of the world. Threatens to decimate anyone who opposes him
2 Destroy the settlement in Tokyo
During the first Black Rebellion, the second princess Cornelia li Britannia and her army formed the main opposition to Lelouch and his Black Knights. She stationed troops around the Tokyo settlement where the battle was to take place, hoping to stop the rebels’ advance. However, she had already unknowingly fallen for Lelouch’s trick.
Lelouch, using the system to counter the effects of earthquakes, the whole area collapses. The result was the submergence of the majority of Cornelia’s army and the demolition of several buildings in the area, believed to have left thousands dead. He was well aware of the risks involved in his actions, as evidenced when he told CC that his hands had been stained long before he ordered the settlement to collapse.
1 Purifying the Denizens of the Geass Order
After Shirley’s death at Rolo’s hands, Lelouch decides to eliminate the Geass’ power at its source, claiming it caused too much grief. With this in mind, Lelouch heads for the Geass Order, a place where Geass research is conducted and Geass users are born.
Upon arrival, with a few members of the Black Knights in tow, Lelouch orders the complete extermination of the inhabitants of the Geass Order, an order that leads to the deaths of several helpless families, including their children. Even when his soldiers question the use of such brutal methods on civilians without the ability to fight back, he reprimands them and says questions will be answered with punishment.
