As Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was one of the best video game adaptations in the franchise’s history, fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. With Cal, BD-1 and the Mantis crew a regular part of Star Wars canon, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor already has high expectations.
While little has been revealed about this sequel, the first trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor renewed interest in the series. however, sequels are always a tricky balance. It’s hard to keep what fans loved while the game feels new, as many other franchises have realized. If Respawn Entertainment is to maintain the success of the first game while also telling a new story, Cal’s Force powers will be an essential part of that formula.
Star Wars Jedi: Force Powers from Fallen Order
One of the best parts of Fallen Order were the Force powers that Cal acquired during the game. The way players could use the Force to interact with the environment and participate in dynamic Force battles was revolutionary. No other Star Wars game has been able to effectively capture the allure of wielding the Force as well.
Force Slow allowed Cal to slow down fast-moving machines he needed to get around, or slow down a group of enemies before taking them down with his lightsaber. Force Push and Pull allowed Cal to move objects he couldn’t otherwise lift to reach new areas of the map, while providing a powerful way to take on enemies. There are few things more typical Star Wars then push Force Stormtroopers off ledges. The rest of Cal’s Force powers, such as run and double jump, were more important for exploration than combat, but fun nonetheless. Cal’s Force Echo ability in Jedi: Fallen Order was also an important storytelling tool.
Fallen Order was clever with how it deployed Force powers. Because Cal’s connection to the Force was deliberately severed to protect himself from the Jedi-hunting Inquisitors, players had to work to restore his powers for a final showdown with Second Sister. By slowly allowing Cal to access them throughout the game, it opened up new areas to explore on previously visited worlds. Like the best RPGs, Fallen Order encouraged players to explore every corner of the universe using the Force and BD-1, one of the best video game companions, to find hidden treasures.
Potential Powers for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
if Star Wars Jedi: Survivor wants to capture the magic of the original game, it will have to present new Force powers and gameplay dynamics while preserving Jedi: Fallen Order‘s Souls-like features. The combat should feel fresh and new types of puzzles should be introduced.
Force Grip is a force that would be very effective in either situation. Fallen Order provided a simplified version with the Force Pull power, but Grip would give players more control. Essentially, this would allow Cal to use the Force to grab a person, beast, or object and move it exactly where he wants it. Force Grip can be used in combat to attack enemies with the environment, while also introducing new puzzles that require players to move objects in the air to reach certain areas.
One of the first powers introduced in Star Wars is Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Jedi mind trick. While it probably doesn’t have many uses for combat, brain tricks could introduce a whole new kind of puzzle in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. From Assassin’s Creed until Spider Man, stealth missions have a long history in video games. Using Jedi mind tricks, Survivor could well be in the mix. The trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor making it look like there will be more action on Imperial bases than before, meaning stealth is critical to keeping Cal safe from entire squads of stormtroopers and inquisitors.
While typically associated with the Sith rather than the Jedi, Force Lightning would be an incredible force to use in the game. Due to its sheer strength, Lightning should be an ability that can only be accessed in certain situations, such as getting a high attack combo or having a full Force meter. Having a way to damage enemies at a distance would add some interesting new combat dynamics. if Star Wars Jedi: Survivor exploring the dark side of the Force, Force Lightning is even more likely to be shown.
Another force that Survivor could explore is Ezra Bridger’s Force connection to beasts from Star Wars Rebels. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is full of interesting creatures to fight and kill, but bringing them to Cal’s side in battle can be a game changer. Fallen Order had already explored this concept lightly, as BD-1 could cut into security droids to turn them into allies. Using the beasts to help with the environment puzzle can also introduce a fun dynamic.
There’s no shortage of new powers Cal could acquire in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. By drawing on an established canon or creating new ones, Respawn can’t go wrong. However, new powers need to be introduced to make sure the game doesn’t feel like a revamped version of Fallen Order. Good sequels stand on their own rather than just riding on the success of the original, and while fans wait for the news of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s release date, there is no shortage of speculation about what the future holds.
