NASA plans to send a rocket to the moon with “Artemis 1” for the first time in nearly 50 years on Monday. It could power US spaceflights into deep space — but what if the mission fails?
There is no shortage of superlatives on this mission: the most powerful rocket in the world, the furthest flight man will ever undertake, the longest stay of a space capsule in space without docking. In tests, NASA has proven it’s ready to return to the moon — but on Monday it must show that what it’s designed and built will work in the harsh realities of space.
A two-hour start window opens at around 2.30pm German time. Then the mission-built launch vehicle called “Space Launch System”, or SLS for short, must lift off and launch the Orion space capsule, which sits at the top.
Houston, we’re going back to the moon! – The US’s ambitious space plans

Will the heat shield hold up?
The spacecraft is scheduled to fly to the moon in about two weeks, orbit it several times for about two weeks, before finally returning to Earth and landing in the Pacific Ocean on October 10. The mission is scheduled for 42 days.
NASA doesn’t just want to test whether the rocket can be successfully launched and the spacecraft can be successfully taken to the moon. The latter is especially important: will the Orion capsule return safely? Will the heat shield hold when it enters Earth’s atmosphere? Because on the next mission, people should already be in the Orion pod.
Before the start of the American moon mission Artemis-1
Kerstin Klein, ARD Washington, daily news at 8 p.m., August 28, 2022
With “Artemis 2” in 2024, astronauts will be back in orbit for the first time since 1972. With “Artemis 3” people should set foot on the moon again by 2025 at the earliest – including the first woman and first person of color. Twelve people have walked on the moon so far. All Americans, all white men.
A “Moon to Mars Mission”
And the Americans don’t just want to go back to the moon – they call the “Artemis” program a “Moon to Mars mission”. Together with European and other partners, a space station is already being built that will orbit the moon permanently in a few years. “Gateway” is the name of the project and is like an ISS, only smaller. Space shuttles must be able to dock there and crews must be able to make a stopover on their way to the moon.
“Gateway” should also be a stopover on the way to Mars from the US. Spacecraft bound for Mars can be tested here, relatively close to Earth, before being sent deeper into space. Since the Moon’s gravitational pull is much lower than Earth’s, it’s easier to escape from it. The effects of cosmic rays on the human body should also be studied here before sending humans to Mars. Mars is expected to be in late 2030 or early 2040 at the earliest. Goal: to be faster than China.
Controversial Mission
The mission of “Artemis” is not undisputed. In particular, the development of the launch vehicle has been delayed several times and its costs have exploded. In total, the mission is estimated to cost $93 billion by 2025. According to NASA, a single launch of “Artemis” will cost $4.1 billion US dollars. That alone makes it clear: the start of “Artemis 1” must not go wrong under any circumstances.
If it succeeds, it could send US spaceflight into deep space — if it fails, it could spell the end of NASA’s ambitions for a long time to come. It follows that NASA will not take any risks. If problems arise for the announced start on Monday at 14:33 GMT or if the weather does not cooperate, the start will be postponed. Other possible start days are September 2 and 5.
On the other hand, NASA is preparing the really big train station for Monday. US Vice President Kamala Harris will arrive and give a speech. Herbie Hancock will perform the National Anthem and star cellist Yo-Yo Ma will perform “America the Beautiful” with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
So far, everything is going according to plan, according to NASA. But in the end, she’ll put caution over speed. Because one thing she can’t afford: that not everything works when you start.
