The Seattle Seahawks had their annual intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at Lumen Field, with about 7,000 fans in attendance (simultaneous with the Mariners’ victory over the Angels at T-Mobile Park, mind you). Seattle’s Navy Blue team beat the Action Green team by a score of 17-13, but the score is far less important than the players’ performance.
Both Drew Lock and Geno Smith got to lead the first and second team fouls, with Jacob Eason having a seemingly highly forgettable cameo leading the third team players. It seems that 1s vs. 1s didn’t come out and some of that wasn’t practical anyway due to players being sidelined with an injury.
Unofficially, Lock was 19/27 and Smith was 11/20. Both quarterbacks led touchdown drives in their respective opening series (albeit against second team defenses). Rashad Penny and Kenneth Walker both completed goals by getting into the end zone. Here’s a glimpse of Walker and that ability to cut out so fast.
Lock did throw a touchdown pass to Cody Thompson later in the day (more on that later). He also threw a nice addition to Dareke Young in the seventh round, and here’s a look at that highlight.
Seahawks attack is more dynamic, moves more, with Drew Lock. Play action, option throws on the run, more offside action when Lock is inside compared to Geno Smith, who they dropped back more.
Which style will they choose?
Lock 10 for 10 passes to start the sham game

DK Metcalf looked almost surprised when Lock threw the seam down perfectly between slot and safety. It has been a long time since such a pitch was thrown on this field.

Drew Lock had a nice throw to Colby Parkinson on an RPO opportunity. He said that was an aspect of his game that he excelled at in college.

Geno’s day started warm but cooled down considerably as the afternoon wore on, but on his better moments he clearly had a good rhythm with DK Metcalf.
Geno Smith 6 for 8 passes, 3 completions to DK Metcalf, short passes on TD drive with 1st attack vs 2nd defense to start the fake Seahawks game. 1-yard TD run by Rahsaad Penny

Smith has three first throws down so far after interacting with Tyler Lockett on a quick hit against Marquise Blair in cover.

Rookie tackle Abe Lucas got the start with the 1s, with presumptive leader to get Jake Curhan in the right spot as the left tackle with the 2s. Everyone else expected to be a starter — Charles Cross, Damien Lewis, Austin Blythe and Gabe Jackson — got first-team action today.
Now I have to reveal that Field Gulls was not present at this game and the live stream the Seahawks had was from the warm-ups only, so our eyes and ears were essentially the experienced beat reporters in attendance. The name that came up repeatedly in defense was rookie CB Tariq Woolen, who was “beaten” for a touchdown by Thompson, but apparently it was some pretty crazy action.
Another 5 for 5 drive for Drew Lock topped off with a wild 20-yard TD grab by Cody Thompson. Tariq Woolen was all over the game and had what appeared to be a broken pass, but it fell right on Thompson putting it down in the end zone.

But he had some other bright moments!
The most impactful defensive player of the Seahawks’ first half sham play: rookie CB Tariq Woolen. 2 PBUs, near INT. I’m not going to let Marquise Goodwin pass him all the way through the camp. Even broke the TD pass on a shoulder throw from Lock that tapped Cody Thompson to himself. Strong early camp

“That was really good work for him,” Pete Carroll said of Tariq Woolen.
Woolen ran with the first team defense in the right corner with Artie Burns on the left while Sidney Jones sat outside.

Of course, with virtually no tackling and the fact that this is just a scrimmage, don’t read too much about what happened this afternoon. Unfortunately we had one injury and that was an elbow problem for LJ Collier, and at the moment there are no updates on his status.
The Seattle preseason kicks off August 13 at 7:00 PM ET / 4:00 PM PT with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And before we close this, a hello to Richard Sherman!
