Scott Parker described Bournemouth’s 9-0 loss to Liverpool as the most painful experience of his career, as well as a taste of things to come for his newly promoted side unless new players arrive in the final days of the transfer window.
Bournemouth suffered a record-matching defeat in the Premier League as Jürgen Klopp’s side recorded their first win of the season in emphatic style.
The Liverpool manager expressed his condolences to his Bournemouth counterpart, who has spent £22.6million on two players and made three free transfers since winning promotion. “You look at the other two teams that have gone up and what they’ve spent,” Klopp said of Fulham and Nottingham Forest. “Then you look at Bournemouth and you think, ‘Okay, what’s going to happen there?’ The competition is very tough and it is clear that if you have just won promotion, the problems start now.”
Parker apologized to Bournemouth fans for the defeat and admitted his players simply couldn’t handle the quality gap at Anfield. “It goes without saying that it is a very humbling experience. I’m pretty shocked,” he said.
“It doesn’t surprise me, because the level here is much higher than here. I’m not making up an excuse, some of the goals were our own doing.
“I feel sorry for the fans. I feel sorry for the players because we are ill-equipped at this level. This doesn’t shine for me. There are players who are experiencing the Premier League for the first time. I never thought we would 9-0, but I expected a real challenge at certain times in certain games.
“This is the hardest day, as a player and certainly as a coach. The sidelines were quite painful today and I felt it was painful for the players too. They need some help.
“Liverpool was relentless and my boys were lying flat on the ground, sometimes looking for oxygen and trying to breathe.”
Despite being at his lowest point, the Bournemouth manager predicted further agony without necessary reinforcements ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Parker added: “I can see some more” [routs]. We have to make a decision. I’ve been clear what this season could look like for us and I’m sticking to that.
“We have to make a decision and try to help this young group who sometimes struggle for air. Each of us has to make that decision. We’ve been trying to get more quality in and there’s a million reasons why [it hasn’t happened].”
