Parents are warned about the indie horror game Poppy Playtime by police and schools, but it’s not as horrifying as it’s portrayed.
With parents warned about the dangers of Poppy playtime, many have wondered if the game is as terrifying as these warnings seem to describe it. After becoming the subject of viral scary videos on popular platforms, such as YouTube and TikTok, police began warning parents about Poppy playtime and the content of the horror title, to protect unsuspecting children. Despite being scary, the general themes displayed in the game itself aren’t nearly as bad as these warnings make them look like.
Poppy playtime is an indie horror game in which players explore an abandoned toy factory, solve puzzles and dodge the dangers in the colorful halls. It has an incredibly unique level design, which creates tension in even the brightest of environments, and the main antagonists are inspired by popular toys, creating a dichotomy between appearing friendly and being truly nightmarish. Unfortunately, this also affected how Poppy playtime is observed by parental control software programs, where it can often circumvent security standards due to its seemingly innocuous appearance.
although Poppy playtime is not safe for certain children, it is not nearly as inappropriate or scary as the warnings from schools and police make it out to be. According to the CEO of MOB Games in an interview with FOX2nu, it’s suitable for kids over the age of eight, which is a fair rating given that most of the gameplay isn’t devoted to the wild scenes featured in these viral videos. Not only do the chase sequences and jumpscares appear in very short segments of each chapter, but the terrifying images themselves only manage to imply the occurrence of violence, without showing it in an explicit or gruesome way.
Poppy Playtime itself is actually not that scary
Most viral videos about Poppy playtime usually show references or even outright footage of the chase sequences that made the game so popular, especially the one featuring Huggy Wuggy, a character that kids seem to love. However, only a small part of each chapter is devoted to these types of scenarios. During most of the game, players explore the factory landscape and solve puzzles, building a sense of intrigue and comfort that can be suddenly and brilliantly broken with these unexpected, highly tense moments. So, while the cautions are correct when referring to very young or easily frightened children, portraying Poppy playtime because an intense experience full of jumpscares and constant fear is misleading.
Not only that, but the game has a distinct lack of disturbing, inappropriate, horrific or explicitly violent content. While there are certain Poppy Playtime scenes that leave players “traumatized,” especially the younger crowd, most of the scary footage consists of jump scares and bloodstains scattered throughout the factory. Poppy playtime is rarely inappropriately violent, often resorting to leaving mere implications of the horrors that might have taken place before the protagonist’s arrival. This situation is very similar to what happened in the first one Five nights at Freddy’s game, which looked friendly and with content for children to tell a cheeky story, revealed through bits of text instead of explicit images.
Police and school warnings about the game are certainly valid, especially when looking at the health and safety of very young children. Follow the steps of Five nights at Freddy’s, Poppy playtime shows subjects that are part of childhood while telling a horrifying story to the audience and capturing the attention of children with its bright and colorful design. The exposure to the consistent horror depicted in the viral videos that led to these warnings can be extremely unhealthy and negatively impact the child, but the game itself isn’t hugely terrifying or violent.
