For those planning on playing Overwatch 2 on multiple platforms, that won’t be a problem, as Blizzard Entertainment has announced Overwatch 2’s cross-progression! This will be available once the game officially launches in October!
Beginning August 16 (today), each player with a linked console account will be prompted upon login to identify, select and confirm the accounts you wish to merge. Once approved, Blizzard will prepare your accounts to be merged during the Overwatch 2 release.
Read on for the full FAQ that should answer all your cross-progression questions.
Frequently asked questions about Overwatch 2 cross-progression:
How do I merge my accounts?
How do I link my console account to Battle.net if it wasn’t automatically detected?
Here are the steps you can take to merge your console account with a battle.net account:
- Log in to Overwatch from your console account.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to scan a QR code on your cell phone.
- Enter the code displayed on your console to connect to or create your Blizzard Battle.net account.
- If you have not previously verified your mobile phone number, you will be prompted to do so via SMS authentication.
- Once completed, you will be asked to confirm your account at the next game login to merge your accounts.
You only have one chance to merge the correct account.
Once you merge a console account with a battle.net account, you cannot link to another console account on the same platform. Double check that you are linking the correct account to your battle.net account.
If you encounter errors linking your accounts, follow the instructions in the support article Common Account Linking Issues.
See the Account Link support article for more information about merging your accounts.
To set up from the PC, you can visit the Battle.net Connections webpage.
Which platforms are included in account merging?
The platforms included in the account merging are Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Can I link multiple accounts on the same platform?
Only one account per platform can be linked together. For example, if you have two accounts on the PC, you cannot merge those accounts. The same goes for multiple accounts on Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch.
Can I change or modify the console accounts already linked to my Battle.net account before merging accounts?
Yes. It’s incredibly important to make sure the correct account from each console you want to link is linked to your battle.net account.
The Merge Account screen in the game shows all linked accounts. You can click on “Switch Accounts” and you will be prompted to scan a QR code from your mobile phone, or you can go to account.battle.net/connections.
After you confirm the account merge, you cannot immediately link a new console account to that battle.net account. Progress is saved to the battle.net account you merge with, so you cannot transfer progress from that console account to an additional battle.net account.
How does merging accounts work?
Why do I need to merge my Overwatch 2 accounts?
All players need a battle.net account to play Overwatch 2, regardless of platform. Players must confirm their account merge to transfer progress from Overwatch to Overwatch 2.
This includes players who linked their accounts during the Overwatch Cross-Play release.
What happens to my console accounts after I merge them with a battle.net account?
After you merge your console accounts with a battle.net account, all progress on those console accounts will be saved to the battle.net account.
Can I change which accounts are linked together after the merge is complete?
You can unlink your console accounts from your Battle.net account at any time. However, there is a 1 year cooling off period for linking new accounts to your Battle.net account.
When you link a new console account to your battle.net account, it will have access to the progress and in-game items of the battle.net account. However, the new console account will not transfer progress and in-game items to the linked battle.net account.
What happens if I don’t merge my console account with a battle.net account?
Players of all platforms need a battle.net account to play Overwatch 2.
For console players, merging accounts is also the only way to access and transfer progress to Overwatch 2.
For PC players, progress is automatically carried over to Overwatch 2 and you have the option to merge console accounts with your battle.net account.
If you don’t confirm the in-game account merge, you’ll still see an in-game screen identifying your accounts and asking for approval to merge. You can check which accounts are linked to your battle.net account here: https://account.battle.net/connections/.
How do my in-game items and progress come together?
How are my in-game items merged?
All items in the Hero Gallery on different platforms will be present in the merged battle.net account. This includes all sprays, emotes, skins, and everything else on the current Hero Gallery tab in the game. Duplicate cosmetics on different platforms will be merged into one battle.net account.
