There have been so many Kirby games over the years, from mainline platformers to spin-off party games. And though time will tell whether Kirby’s dream buffet will be among the best the series has to offer, the game has done a lot to commemorate the glory of the pink puffball.
through various methods, Kirby’s dream buffet feels like a celebration of the Kirbyfranchise from the first iteration to now. And while more casual players will notice some fun nods to games they may have played, that hard Kirby fans will notice Easter eggs that many others may not notice.
7 Skill Names
As with most Kirby spell, Kirby’s dream buffet gives players the power to pick up skills that can be used to aid in the main game. Those familiar with the games will recognize some of the skills, and big fans will recognize them all, except for the new ability Jelly.
While forces like Burning and Stone were with the franchise for the most entries, Hi-Jump last appeared in Kirby’s Return to Dreamland and was only in a few games before that point. Even some animations, such as Kirby’s face with stone, will be familiar to big fans.
6 star blocks
There are some iconic set pieces in the Kirby franchise that fans will always expect to feature prominently in every game. For example, most levels always have star blocks that Kirby can destroy or absorb to shoot enemies. Star blocks are not prominent in Kirby’s dream buffetbut they are used.
For example, during the mini-game where players are asked to destroy blocks of strawberries, these are cookie star blocks that players break open. These rounds go by quickly, so to get a better look at them, enter Free Roll mode and go behind the cake. There are both large and small boxes, just like in the other games.
5 Memorable music
There are a handful of rewards that players can earn as they level up in Kirby’s dream buffet, some of which will be incredibly nostalgic for the hardcore fans of the franchise who have played every game. The music discs are a kind of reward.
These provide new music that the game cycles through as players play. While most of these songs aren’t called by their original names, fans will notice classic tracks like “Meta Knight’s Revenge” from Kirby Super Star and “Rainbow Route” by Kirby and the Great Mirror.
4 Returning Enemies
There are many memorable Kirby enemies over the years. Most of them are cute creatures that may seem harmless, while others make it very clear that they will hurt Kirby if given the chance. While Kirby’s dream buffet has no focus on enemies, there are quite a few returnees.
Some of the classics include Gordo, Bronto Burt, Kabu, Shotzo, and Cappy, while there are even less common enemies like Bouncy and Master Hand, who rose to fame in the Super Smash Bros. franchise, but did appear in Kirby and the Great Mirror.
3 Specific costumes
The best of the Kirby’s dream buffet is that players can customize their own Kirby in any color or costume they want. While the colors may have a few nods to previous games, the real nostalgic kick is the different costumes based on famous characters from Kirby Past.
While there are some simple outfits like Kirby with whipped cream or a bandana on his head, there are also classic individuals like Daroach (Kirby: Squeak Squad) and Susie (Kirby: Planet Roboto). However, there are not only enemies, there are also outfits of allies such as Rick (Kirby’s Dreamland 2) and Chuchu (Kirby’s Dreamland 3).
2 Fight Whispy Woods
Along with the array of enemies that are staples of the Kirby franchise, there are also a handful of classic bosses that the games are also known for. One of the most recurring bosses in the franchise is Whispy Woods, who is the first boss in most cases Kirby spell.
Whispy Woods appears in Kirby’s dream buffet by his own stage, but players can also see him in Free Roll mode. In fact, players can attack Whispy Woods as if participating in a boss fight, to the point where players can beat Whispy Woods to spawn a bunch of strawberries. He will even have his iconic tearful face after a defeat.
1 character treats
While most of the rewards in Kirby’s Dream Buffet are meant to hit fans with tons of nostalgia, none will dig deeper than the Character Treats players earn after every match. The character treats are used to decorate the player’s cake in the main lobby, with the treat on top of the cake serving as the player’s starting position.
But what stands out about the Character Treats is the amount of cookies with the most obscure character references of almost any Kirby game, from the most famous titles to the spin-offs that aren’t as played or loved. There are a ton of Easter eggs to be found if you look through the treats.
Kirby’s dream buffet is out now on Nintendo Switch.
