strayed became one of the few games of the year that could hold its own against a game like Elden Ring. While most games invite players to become a great warrior in another world, strayed let people just become cats. Set in a futuristic world where only robots exist (except for at least one litter of cats), strayed worked perfectly as a game for those who wanted to explore a city like a cat.
But strayed is a short game, and a lot of people probably want something similar. Either something low-stress, focused on exploration, a game that’s completely devoid of action and focused on storytelling, or just something where they can be a cat again.
10 Subnautica asks players to explore an underwater alien world
Trade in the hauntingly beautiful city strayed for an alien underwater planet in Subnautics. Inside Subnautics, the player takes on the role of the last survivor of their spaceship, the Aurora. Stranded on the planet, the only way to try is to live long enough to get off the planet.
Fortunately, the game has all kinds of tools to make survival easier. Players can build their own base and vehicles as the story unfolds and players learn the secrets of this new planet.
9 Kitaria Fables asks players to save Paw Village as an adventurous cat
The point of strayed was to experience life as a cat in a world without humans. Kitaria fables does something similar, but instead of the world being filled with robots, they’re all anthropomorphic animals. There are more combat as this is a legit action RPG, but there is also crafting and farming for players who want to relax.
The relaxation won’t last long, though, as the player is tasked with discovering why the wildlife around Paw Village has become so aggressive. Kitaria sends players around the world into perilous dungeons, alone and in co-op, to discover the truth about what happened.
8 Night in the Woods takes place in a normal world with animals as humans
Developer Infinite Fall Released Night in the forest in 2017 after a successful Kickstarter made four times more than its original goal. Night in the woods begins as an exploration game about school dropout Mae Borowski after she returns to her hometown.
But players who expect nothing more than a relaxing life story may be disturbed during the story. While there’s a lot of focus on the connections Mae builds with the people in town, some twists and turns will attract fans looking for something a little deeper into the game’s world.
7 Abzu makes swimming in video games an enjoyable experience
Abzu may be the first game for Giant Squid Studios, but the developers were known for working on some of the best indie games like Flower and Trip. And like those two games, Abzu creates its own sublime experience; this time focused on exploring an ocean.
As a diver, Abzu challenges players to team up with a great white shark to bring life back to the seas. While most games have terrible underwater controls, Abzu makes swimming an unforgettable experience where players can encounter all kinds of marine life.
6 Biomutant is an open world game with only animals world
BiomutantLike it strayed, shows a world without humanity. But instead of focusing on a cyberpunk world of all robots, this is a world where only mutated animals exist. As a hero, the protagonist explores the world to fight against the creatures attacking the Tree of Life, which has been weakened by disaster.
Although the exploration strayed the love of fans is still present in this open world, the focus is much more on the battle. The protagonist can be mutated to become faster or stronger, craft new weapons, and master moves as they meet more characters.
5 Cloudpunk lets players become a delivery man in a cyberpunk world
Part of Strays attraction allows the player to exist in a low-stress version of a cyberpunk world. While strayed has fights, it’s more about exploration and being a cat. cloudpunk takes the exploration further, dropping the fights completely and increasing the focus on the story.
In this universe, players are deliverers for the Cloudpunk delivery service. Along the way, players meet other citizens and discover the mysteries of the city of Nivalis. unlike strayedthe choices players make in the game will affect the people they meet, so they’ll have to make decisions they’re comfortable with.
4 Okami asks players to become the goddess Amaterasu to save the world
Capcom created a classic where players took on the role of an animal over a decade ago with the PlayStation 2 game okami. If the sun goddess Amaterasu (no, not the technique of Naruto), players embark on a journey to defeat Orochi and his army. Interaction with the world is through the Celestial Brush, which is used to fight enemies, solve puzzles and help others.
Although the game was released with low sales, it has been called one of the best games of the PlayStation 2 era in the years since. And thanks to the game’s cel-shaded look, it still looks just as beautiful as it did at release.
3 Concrete Genie allows players to make their own friends by drawing them
Pixelopus’ Concrete Genius was one of Sony’s most creative titles of the PlayStation 4 era. The player takes on the role of a teenager named Ash, who spends most of his time drawing in his notebook. He is bullied by the boys in his neighborhood, but when his artworks come to life, Ash begins to feel more comfortable with himself and exploring his home.
A lot of Concrete Ghosts appeal lies in using the PS4 DualShock controller to create their own unique paintings, but there are also pre-drawn paintings for players who just want to enjoy the beautiful world.
2 Untitled Goose Game turns players into a nuisance of a goose
One of the best things about strayed is the extent to which players can act like cats. The interaction with objects exists solely for the player to knock them over, just like cats would in real life. Untitled Goose Game is similar, except that the player becomes a burden to a goose instead of a cat.
The puzzles are still there and players can pose a threat to the people of a village instead of exploring a cool cyberpunk world. Maybe it lacks the atmosphere of? strayedbut Untitled Goose Game was one of the coziest Nintendo Switch games of 2019 for a reason.
1 Tunic with challenging action adventure battles with the player as a fox
Tunic exists for anyone who thought Stray was a great idea, but it would be even better if it was fantasy based, and they played like a fox instead of a cat. Nevertheless, the game has a lot in common with Zeldawhere players explore the world and gradually unlock new areas.
Though there is more battle in this game than in strayed, solving puzzles and exploring a mysterious world remains the same. While Tunic is more challengingthen strayedit’s still one of the best games of the year.
