you can say that MultiVersus is made with love. Every move, taunt and line of voice is exactly for the source material, but the most important thing about any platform fighter is that he controls well. And indeed, it does. However, there are some issues that plague the experience, such as the rocky net code that alternates between terrible connections and fantastic response time. MultiVersus has so much potential, but Player First Games needs to make some changes soon.
Game name: MultiVersus
Platform(s): PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5
Publisher(s): Warner Bros. games
Developer(s): Player First Games
A wide selection of characters (already) in MultiVersus
From day one, MultiVersus houses many characters from various forms of media in the Warner Bros. library. You can defeat enemies with Bugs Bunny’s hammer or Arya Stark’s trusty needle sword, while Steven (from Steven Universe) places a bubble shield around his ally and himself.
MultiVersus combines both live-action and cartoon characters in a consistent style that successfully fuses the two together. The visuals are crisp and captivating, while the animation of each character is so detailed. For example, this video from Glickstick shows every movie reference the Iron Giant has in its moveset, and it’s impressive.
The developer Player First Games has dug deep and pushed forward MultiVersus move forward with an immersive moveset for each character that makes perfect sense. An example of this is when: Wonder Woman uses her lasso of truth to pull her ally back onto the stage and uses her braces for a wide area of effect attack.
In addition, each of the characters is usually voiced by their original actors or talented performers who fill the role right down to the bottom. You can hear Kevin Conroy vote Batman like he calls Taz a furball, and Shaggy a hippie. He also references when he collaborated with Mystery Inc on a direct-to-video DVD; Player First Games has done their research and the voting lines are likely to confuse you.
How’s the battle of MultiVersus?
In the past, most licensed platform fighters had, similar to: Super Smash Bros., didn’t understand a decent physics engine; sloppy checks are often felt. MultiVersus is fortunately one of the few platform fighters to master the controls (when the online works). Every jump, dodge and attack feels responsive and you feel like you always understand what your character is doing.
The physics of MultiVersus also feels accurate to the percentage associated with your hero (or villain). The recoil effect of hitting your opponents at 90-100% feels perfect and, most importantly, just as satisfying as watching LeBron James land a three-pointer (yes, he’s in the game). The air dodge system also makes you feel like you can recover better than most other platform fighters.
Overall, every fight feels fair and intense, despite there being a few favorites, like Bugs Bunny and Velma, who have slightly more effective moves than the rest of the cast. However, we did see Tom & Jerry and Wonder Woman win EVO 2022 (played by NAKAT and VoiD) and beat the top characters six rounds to zero, so we assume there isn’t much of a difference.
While some stages would not be competitive, MultiVersus presents some exciting locations to fight in. You can battle it out in a mansion of Scooby Doo, that references the original show, or spikes your opponents into the Batcave. Like the characters, Player First Games has paid attention to the design of the stages and looks accurately where they come from.
To conclude our coverage of the MultiVersus battles, every move feels accurate, satisfying to execute and is really fun to experience match after match.
The bad online experience of MultiVersus
That is until you realize that the online functionality often fails. The game can drop you without a chance to react, and it can zip you from one side of the stage to the other when it’s incredibly bad. I was trying to work with a friend from Eastern North America while I was in a Western region, and time and time again we had connection issues.
Currently, the regions are super broad with only a North American option; it would be cool if they include more areas so players can get a better connection. Hopefully this can be improved when Season 1 is officially released with the addition of Morty to the roster.
However, MultiVersus makes it easy to play with your friends. You can use the game’s crossplay features between PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, and the process is easy to figure out.
A few other notes about MultiVersus
With a small selection of stages available, it can be annoying to hear the same songs over and over. The orchestration is great, but you can only get the Steven Universe theme song before it gets raspy. Instead, a more varied music selection process like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be ideal. Instead of two different themes for each stage, it would be cool if Player First Games could implement more themes in the stages, such as Steven Universe‘s menagerie of original songs and the many Batman melodies over the years.
Another thing to note is the microtransaction system. Because it’s free to play, MultiVersus has to get his money from somewhere. The extra costumes can be expensive at $20 in in-game currency to unlock The animated series version of Batman, but some may be cheaper.
Not all characters are unlocked, and a few are available every week through the free rotation. You have to earn them by earning coins in the game, which may take a while. If you like the grind, it’s good enforcement to keep you playing matches for hours on end.
There’s also a Founder’s Pack to keep in mind. At prices ranging from $39.99 to $99.99, you can unlock up to 30 character tokens and get 2500 Gleamium. It’s expensive, but it can be worth the purchase if you dig up the game after playing it for free.
Finally, MultiVersus is an exceptional fighting game to keep an eye on, and because it’s free to play, it’s very easy to access. However, at the time of writing, Taz is said to be upset about the poor to mediocre online connectivity.

Overview
MultiVersus manages to make this crossover an epic clash, but it online needs improvement across the board to keep players invested.
