Morty Smith, from the beloved Rick and Morty franchise, has finally appeared in the hugely popular Warner Bros Platform Fighter, MultiVersus. First Player Games, the developer of the title, has put a lot of work into Morty, and it shows in its quite technical nature.

Due to its variety of unique mechanics in MultiVersusFrom grenades to summoning Rick’s Ship and more, Morty’s best Perks are unpredictable. So let’s take a look at the best roster found so far for this Bruiser-type character and why these Perks were chosen.

First, let’s explain what the current “meta” Perk Build for Morty is in Season 1:

  • Characteristic advantage: I’m more than just a hammer
  • offence: Ice cream to beat you
  • offence: Make it rain dog
  • Utilities: coffeezilla

At a glance, this Perk layout makes Morty look like a purely projectile-based character, but that’s actually not the case. Like a Bruiser class character, Morty is into it quite a bit, it’s just that his best “tools” are his projectiles, and these Perks help make them even better. And let’s face it, Morty’s hitbox isn’t exactly “perfect” right now either.

I’m more than just a hammer

At the time of writing this, Morty hasn’t been out that long, so it’s hard to say with 100 percent certainty which one. Signature advantage from Morty’s is “the best”. But even so early, players are still convinced it’s a competition between I’m more than just a hammer and Oh that’s still a grenade. Morty’s third signature, Extra Fleeb juiceis basically useless as it stands, although there are some interesting mechanics attached to it that could become worth it with a few tweaks.

In the meantime, I’m more than just a hammer turns Morty’s Side+Attack into a spinning nightmare similar to something like Finn’s Backpack Attack. It’s great for creating a lasting hit box in the center of the stage during a Teams match, even if Morty is exposed to it.

That said, the only reason the Hammer-based Signature Perk wins Oh that’s still a grenade is that Morty’s passive ability, Sci-Fi Explosive Technology, is currently disabled. When this Passive is finally activated in a future update, Morty’s Grenades will get a lot scarier. But in the current version I’m more than just a hammer is the most popular choice.

Ice cream to beat you

Always the Ice cream to beat you Perk is raised, a like Perk, That is flammable document, is usually also mentioned. It’s always “either-or” with these two perks, and it depends on personal preference and general playstyle that you need to be equipped for across the roster.

That is flammable document is a great perk for aggressive type players who want to steadily build damage percentage over time while Ice cream to beat you is great for players who want to slow down their opponent a little so that their moves match up more easily. And how slowly they terminate and telegraph Morty’s attacks, Ice cream to beat you seems like the better choice to me. Plus, he actually has more projectiles than you’d expect with Aw Jeez Snakeshis grenades, and Power of the earth, so he can activate this perk constantly.

Make it rain dog

Since Morty’s grenades are such a critical part of his gear and will become even more important once his passive is deployed, it seems clear that the perks that affect how easily these grenades are used and thrown would be part of his best build . Make it rain dogmakes it easy for Morty to throw grenades and place them around the arena.

Plus, it makes it faster to aim Power of the Earthand it’s harder for enemies to react to Aw Jeez Snakes. Admittedly, if Morty is on a team with a character who has little to no projectiles, it makes a lot more sense to use something like Smooth customer instead, but more often than not, Make it rain dog is the right choice.

coffeezilla

coffeezilla is basically a permanent Perk slot on Morty, just like it is on characters like Bugs Bunny or Velma. This perk gives a passive 10 percent reduced cooldown to all of Morty’s abilities, many of which he has. Just to make it clear, coffeezilla affects a lot of his movements, such as:

  • Temporary backup
  • uh, autopilot
  • Another portal?
  • I think it’s a grenade
  • Both versions of Aw Jeez, Snakes

So even if Morty players want to swap one Perk for another to counter a specific matchup, it’s very rare that they’ll take out Coffeezilla.

Alternative extras

Of course, it’s still very early for Morty, and players are definitely still figuring him out. And as the meta evolves and people really hone in on which attacks from Morty are the absolute best, his Perk lineup may change. With that in mind, here are some alternative options for players who weren’t the most excited about the Best Perk recommendation above or who just want some options for countering enemy teams:

Disclaimer: (O) = Offense Perks, (D) = Defense Perks and (U) = Utility Perks.

  • (O) Shot and killed: A good choice for Morty, given the number of projectiles he has.
  • (O) Hit them while they are down: An option for those who prefer to use Morty’s Power of Earth in a good amount as it applies a weakening effect.
  • (O) I take that: Another option for players who use Power of Earth well, and one that also aids Morty’s Cooldowns.
  • (O) Lumpy Space Punch: A perk that’s pretty much guaranteed to be useful to any character, considering how many battles this game takes in the air.
  • (O) Snowball Effect: A good option for those who are confident in their skills or for those who play Morty a bit more from a distance than up close.
  • (O) That’s flammable Doc: Mentioned in the reasoning for Ice To Beat You, really just a fun way to build constant damage with Projectiles.
  • (D) Show Elasticity: A fun survival option against characters who often stab opponents in the ground, such as Bugs Bunny or Tom and Jerry.
  • (D) Absorb N’ Go: A great return against a Projectile heavy Velma team, as it rewards Morty for faster cooldowns.
  • (D) Boundless Energy: This choice allows players to chase more often without the Dash meter running out too quickly.
  • (D) School me once: The standard counter-option against a projectile-based team.
  • (D) Smooth customer: Gives Morty a bit of an easier window to dodge attacks, which is handy considering how long his kills are.
  • (U) Gravity manipulation: Morty’s Armothy Assault is a great move, but it has a slightly longer winding motion compared to something like Bugs Bunny’s spike move. This will make it easier to hit with Armothy or set to Power of Fire.
  • (You) I dodge you dodge we dodge: Gives Morty more Cooldown reduction just for good dodge.
  • (U) Last position: Morty is actually a pretty heavy character, at least right now, so he’ll usually last until he hits 100+ damage, which makes this perk worth using.
  • (You) Ready for retaliation: Great choice for Teams, especially if Morty’s ally is another Projectile-based character like Reindog.
  • (U) Tasmanian Trigonometry: Gives Morty more survivability against heavy characters who like to dial out with low percentages.
  • (U) Three way jump: This Perk is fantastic for just about any character on the roster, and it gives Morty a bit of a safer recovery and an easier time hunting off-stage.
