although Minecraft is best known for its sandbox survival gameplay, in fact there are multiple ways to experience Mojang’s ever-popular crafting game. This is a huge boon to the game, which has become more and more versatile over the years and appeals to a wide audience of players.
Whether fans enjoy crafting, surviving, building, exploring, or playing on community-created adventure maps, there’s a perfect game mode for everyone. For those who still don’t know what each of these game modes does, this guide will run through everything a player needs to know Minecraft’s game modes.
How many game modes are there in Minecraft?
Minecraft has a total of four game modes that can be accessed: survival mode, creative mode, adventure mode, and spectator mode. Each game mode has unique rules and restrictions and determines how the player can interact with the world around him.
On the Create New World tab in the Minecraft launcher, however, players can only access survival mode, creative mode, and hardcore mode. For the sake of simplicity, this guide considers the hardcore mode to be a modified version of the survival mode, not its own game mode.
Adventure mode and spectator mode are accessible when the player has loaded a world. They then have to type the /gamemode command in the chat and choose adventure or spectator to apply it. Spectator mode also becomes available at the end of a hardcore mode, if the player dies.

Creative Mode – Infinite Resources

Players can reach further when placing and breaking blocks, and they can also break any block in the world by hitting it just once. Players are also not required to have stacks upon stacks of a specific item in their inventory. Only one instance of a cobblestone block will last indefinitely when put down.
Adventure Mode – Ideal for Adventure Maps
As Minecraft has grown over the years, as has the community around it, leading to a variety of full story adventure maps that utilize the assets of Minecraft. To support these adventure maps, the adventure mode has been implemented in the game, which significantly limits the way the player can interact with the world.
Players cannot just break a block in this game mode so that the limits of the adventure card can be respected and the card is not broken or sad. Some objects, such as levers, buttons and chests, can still be used, but not all blocks can be destroyed, even if the player has the right tools in hand.

Spectator Mode – Explore the World Seamlessly
If players just want to observe what’s happening in their world, Spectator mode is the way to go. Players become invisible in this game mode and can fly freely, even through walls and ground. They can also sight other players using commands.
That said, spectators are not divine beings. They have limited options when it comes to interacting with the world. They cannot interact with chests or inventories, and if players are in a single-player world in spectator mode, they cannot open loot chests because the loot in them has not yet been generated. When players die in a hardcore world, they can choose to view their world before it is destroyed forever.
To access spectator mode, players can type the command /gamemode spectator into the chat.
