Insomniac Games recently showed how far it is as a developer within the current generation space. The PS5 editions for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remasteredand Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales they all now include VRR support in addition to 120 Hz support. Marvel’s Spider-Man looks great with ray tracing and the capability for over 50 percent more frames per second, and Marvel’s Spider Man 2 is certainly expected to meet these standards when it launches in 2023 as a PS5 exclusive title.
Marvel’s Spider Man 2 should excel on PS5 without being held back technologically by previous generation hardware. Insomniac has also shown an eagerness to move fully to PS5 with its titles, and with Marvel’s Spider Man 2 releasing sometime next year shouldn’t be a problem as many games have already left the previous generation platforms from their marketing releases. There are many ways Marvel’s Spider Man 2 may improve on the original in terms of technological performance on PS5, but one of those ways involves an often fallible physics animation: dressing and undressing.
In-game costumes would be a real test of technological achievement
Indeed, one-way traffic Marvel’s Spider Man 2 What could set it apart from other current-gen titles and superhero games in recent years is having a fully animated sequence for in-game costumes. Games often try to get around dressing and undressing in creative ways.
This is because dressing or undressing a character can be taxing and expensive to animate through extensive simulation physics and body colliders. In most games, characters either have just one piece of clothing to put on or take off, while an entire wardrobe change is performed off-camera, where the character can be loaded instead. This is practical from a developmental standpoint, but one of the more fun scenes in Spider-Man history is when he clambers across rooftops taking off civilian clothes to don his classic red-and-blue costume.
Instead, even Marvel’s Spider-Man proved how challenging these animations would be, as having Peter Parker pull the mask over his head and down his neck was already a great feat. In Marvel’s Spider Man 2technology could be so far ahead that fans can see Peter or Miles Morales clamber into the game to adapt, with each garment getting its own fabric simulation.
In-game costumes can make Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay dynamic
This would certainly look cinematic and set the standard for what current generation games can do. But while it would look amazing and up-and-coming from a visual perspective, in-game suit-ups could have their own meaning in Marvel’s Spider Man 2the game.
Cutscenes are one thing, but having the protagonist adapt as players control them and navigate an open world traversal is quite another. Players can experience the frenzy of the character as they take off their tops and bottoms to reveal their costume underneath. Furthermore, if for some reason they are not already on their wrists, players can be forced to run and jump over rooftops until Peter or Miles equip their web shooters. Then observing the character as they put on their mask, gloves and boots would humanize them much more than in Marvel’s Spider-Manwhich Peter is ready for after a loading screen.
It will be interesting to see if loading screens persist in Marvel’s Spider Man 2, and while they may well be part of the sequel, it would be incredible to see animations like in-game costumes take place in the open world. However, Peter and Miles are likely to be more technologically advanced in Marvel’s Spider Man 2 regarding gadgets and pack functionality.
For example, their suits may not even be hidden under their regular clothes anymore, especially when Peter’s elongated mechanical appendages appear at the back. Anyway, it will be exciting to see how Insomniac uses PS5 hardware for Marvel’s Spider Man 2.
Marvel’s Spider Man 2 is slated for release in 2023 for PS5.
