ITV Hub, ITV’s streaming app that offers catch-up and on-demand shows and box sets, will soon stop working on many devices – and now a large number of Samsung TVs have been added to that growing list.
And while these are older Samsung TV models (see full list of affected versions below), as Samsung is such a popular brand in the UK, these Smart TVs will no doubt still be in many households.
As we’ve reported in recent weeks, ITV is upgrading content protection technology on its streaming platform ahead of ITV Hub will be replaced by ITVXITV’s new streaming service.
However, the upgrade is not compatible with some older devices, including: Smart TVs from brands like Hisense and Panasoniclike Humax Freesat boxes.
This week, Samsung’s 2015 (and earlier) models have been added to this list, and ITV Hub will get rid of it 28-09-2022.
ITV Hub is normally available on a wide range streaming devices such as the Amazon Fire TV and Roku, as well as on Freeview Playboxes and TVs, and connected Freesat set-top boxes (but only the newer 4K versionsfrom September).
The app relies on broadband and you can use it to stream ITV’s live channels (on select devices) or watch programs on demand.
in Nov, ITV Hub to be replaced by a new streaming service – ITVX, which will feature over 15,000 hours of content (compared to 4,000 on ITV Hub), most of it free (with ads). There will also be a premium tier that will add BritBox to the mix.
The plan is for the ITVX app to be available on any device that currently supports ITV Hub (as well as some new ones, such as Sky Q), but devices that now no longer have access to ITV Hub probably won’t support ITVX either.
ITV Hub abandons Samsung TVs
In recent weeks, viewers with affected devices have received pop-up notifications on their screens stating that ITV Hub will no longer work on their devices after September 28.
It is important to note that the linear ITV Freeview/Freesat channels – the one you are get through an antenna (or satellite) – is not affected by this change.
The only component that has stopped working, on the affected devices, is the broadband-based ITV Hub app, which is mainly used to stream catch-up content and box sets.
Samsung was not initially on the list of affected devices – but was added this week.
Affected models are Samsung TVs from 2015 and earlier: Those from 2014 and earlier that run Samsung’s Orsay (Linux) operating systemand Samsung’s 2015 models running Tizen OS 2.3.
Tizen is Samsung’s operating system for Smart TVs (as well as some other Samsung devices). It is also used on newer models (2022 models running Tizen 6.5), but the only affected OS version that ITV Hub will lose is Tizen 2.3.
The best way to know if your Samsung TV is affected by this change is to look for the pop-up message on the TV itself.
But for your convenience, here’s the full list of 2015 Samsung TV models running Tizen 2.3.
Note – Some of these models were not sold in the UK, but I am including the full list for easier reference.
Also note that the version numbers presented here are usually the last part of the actual TV model, as most versions/series were sold under different TV formats available.
So eg. JS9000 could have been sold as UE55JS9000T (for the UltraHD European 55″ model), UE48JS9000T (for the UltraHD European 48″ model), etc.
