the back rooms are certainly one of the most surreal stories that have hung on readers’ screens for a long time. The urban legend is based on a simple question: since there is a human simulation, what if a person is cut from reality and gets into the unencumbered parts of the map? The ‘back rooms’ refer to those unencumbered, subliminal areas that look strangely familiar to viewers as if they had explored them in a dream. The Backrooms are often depicted as endless maze-like corridors tinged in yellow from floor to ceiling. That said, as the urban legend’s popularity has skyrocketed, fans have built on that setting and created other subliminal “levels” of the Backrooms.

In the back rooms is just one of the few indie horror games based on the concept of the Backrooms. Since the game’s release, it has quickly become one of the most popular games based on the Backrooms. With four-player co-op and decent graphics (since the game is still in early access), In the back rooms also throws its own spotlight on some of the hair-raising entities alleged to stalk those unfortunate enough to be trapped in the Backrooms.

5 Entity 110: The Carnivorous Balloon

Entity 110, known as the flesh-eating balloon, truly encompasses fear in what is known. While it may seem like a harmless balloon at first glance, if players get too close to it, it grabs and attacks with a gnarled jumpscare.

While the entity’s jumpscares are sudden and shocking to players, Entity 110 is ultimately just a hostile red balloon. While it may be unnerving to see something so familiar amid the fear of the unknown in the Backrooms, the Carnivorous Balloon’s simple design doesn’t have the same scare factor as some of the other entities hidden within. Inside The Backrooms.

4 Entity 8: The Hound

Entity 8, known as The Hound, is one of the entities players most often encounter within Inside The Backrooms. This entity resembles a confused humanoid figure walking on all fours, similar to a dog or a caveman.

In-game, players must maintain eye contact with The Hound to gain distance between the creature and themselves. The entity is intimidated by the eye contact and will not be tied to players if they stare straight at it. Being forced to look at this creature, not knowing if it will run at the player gazing at it anyway, builds more fear in the player than the eerie yet simple design of the humanoid entity.

3 Unknown entity: bacteria

If players were nervous about the mechanical Siren Head, they’ll be just as petrified by the lanky, wiry creature known as the Unknown Entity. This entity, dubbed “Bacteria” by its creator, Kane Pixels, is tricky to come across In the back rooms if players rely on proximity chat or even just in the same voice call as others to communicate while playing.

This entity is attracted to radio signals, which means that players using the in-game walkie-talkies to communicate will have to limit their communication or suffer the consequences. While this entity may be easy to avoid, the crippling fear of players communicating using walkie-talkies is about if and when Bacteria will spawn around them is hair-raising, especially in those dark hallways.

2 Entity 10: Skin Stealers

Entity 10, also known as the Skin-Stealers, are tall, seemingly skinless, humanoid entities that peer through the darkness with two beady eyes. Their mouths are long and hideous, adorned with small, sharp teeth that are constructed so that they can wear their victim’s skin as a disguise.

The concept of this skinless entity is horrifying in itself. However, being stalked by the tall entity within In the back rooms and being attacked with its shocking, hair-raising jumpscare only adds to the fear, especially for those who already know the ultimate fate of those the entity captures

1 Entity 3: The Smiler

Entity 3, known as The Smiler, is by far one of the most horrifying entities in Inside The Backrooms. Not only is the twisted, wide grin the entity pulls out enough to give even the most intrepid player nightmares, but the way the entity spawns and lurks around every corner in the game makes its appearance that much more chilling.

Players must carefully turn the corners and look down the hallways before setting off, as Entity 3 can be around the corner or further down the hallway, staring and smiling with its eyes and grin poking through the darkness. More than any other entity in In the back rooms, Entity 3 will both terrify players and make them feel like there really is no escaping the monsters in the endless maze that players are trapped in.

In the back rooms is currently available on PC.
