Humble has managed to forge a real niche in the industry, offering unique bundles for games from AAA titles to indie games, as well as deals on software and books. While the discounts are more than competitive year-round, the company, like many others, hosts an annual summer sale that kicks things up a notch. This year is no different, with a range of offers on games from 10% off to 90% off their original suggested retail price.
While many of the titles are available through subscription services, right now there are few better places to find deals for those who want to own the games permanently. A huge variety of genres are offered, and a few titles stand out above the rest as excellent options at discounted rates.
Valheim ($14.99; 25% off)
Developed by Iron Gate AB, Valheim is a savage survival game set in a world inspired by Norse mythology. While the game is only in Early Access, it has made great strides in recent months and currently has an overwhelmingly positive feedback score on Steam. The game can be played alone or with up to 10 others on player-hosted servers. The difficulty of enemies increases as the game progresses, so no area becomes irrelevant.
Valheim can be a little more forgiving than some other survival titles. For example, if you don’t eat, the player’s character won’t be killed, and if you meet their needs, you’ll get buffs and other benefits. With procedurally generated biomes, an extraordinarily detailed base building system, intuitive creation, and massive boss fights, it currently stands above many other entries in a saturated genre.
No Man’s Sky ($29.99; 50% off)
The first release of No Man’s Sky will forever remain one of the most infamous in video game history. However, the subsequent recovery through a series of massive updates has been impressive, with the game now in a state where it can safely be called one of the best of its kind. The latest of these, the Endurance Update, has added a huge range of new content to an already incredibly large game.
New players starting in the world can build massive bases or cargo ships (both on planets and in space) and assemble a dynamic crew to operate them. There are also a ton of story missions to embark on and an almost limitless universe to explore at any pace. With multiplayer options available to help the game’s key player base interact, it’s both an impressive feat and a uniquely fun space simulator.
Control Ultimate Edition ($11.99; 70% off)
Check was one of the highest-rated games of 2019, with its blend of immersive narrative and reality-bending gameplay that received near-universal acclaim from critics and fans alike. Based on the internet stories of the SCP Foundation, the game follows Jesse Faden, the director of a shadowy organization known as the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). During the game, the player learns powers to fight against a transdimensional enemy known as the Hiss.
While the original way the game tells the story is undoubtedly its main strength, Remedy Entertainment has also managed to create a solid gameplay experience that differs from the purely linear nature of its previous releases. The directions from Metroidvania games are clear and the final product is all the better for it. This Ultimate Edition includes both expansions and all additional content.
Yakuza Kiwami ($6.99; 65% off)
The Yakuza games have been almost uniquely consistent for a series released so regularly, but Yakuza Kiwami is one of the best. A remake of the first game in the series released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005, Yakuza Kiwami follows Kazuma Kiryu as he rises through the ranks of the titular organization. The game’s combat system is one of its main strengths, with players being able to choose between four unique fighting styles, ranging from the weak but fast Rush to the tough, hard-hitting Brawler.
The story is also very engaging and notes the comedic elements of games like Grand Theft Auto and pairing them with the gritty over-the-top Mafioso lifestyles depicted in Scarface and other films of its kind.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands (Chaotic Great Edition: $59.99; 25% off / Standard Edition: $44.99; 25% off)
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is set in the chaotic world of a table game known as Bunkers & Badassesled by the Dungeon Master Tiny Tina (played by Ashly Burch, best known for her work as Aloy in the Horizon spell). The game is a fun mix of first-person shooter and action RPG that builds on the foundations laid out in the border areas franchise, but does enough to differentiate itself in the long run.
The neon, fluorescent background that permeates throughout may not be for everyone, but it undoubtedly makes for a visual experience unlike any other game before. There are two versions of the game for sale, and with a star cast of voice actors, random encounters and an infinite dungeon mode, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a game that takes a long time to feel stale.
While the above games are among this year’s best offers, there are many more to choose from. The main sale will run through Friday, September 9, with several flash deals during that period to add to the already impressive range.
