In We Happy Few, Joy is a hallucinogenic drug whose goal is to erase the past from everyone’s memory, so that the people of Wellington Wells to live a happy – albeit naive – life. Not taking your Joy has negative consequences and there are several detectors in town to make sure everyone is taking their drug.
There are also negative effects to take Joy, and if you want to save yourself, the recordingsare there ways to take the medicine fool everyone and go about your day peacefully; but only one rotten downer would like to do such a thing. If you want to avoid taking Joy and have to deal with the various side effects and crashes, there are other ways to pass the various Joy Detectors during the game.
Understanding the different joy detectors
First, let’s take a look at all the different types of joy detectors Arthur finds in both Hamlyn village and Parade district. Joy Detectors have not been found in the Garden District, since Wastrels live there and usually they don’t take Joy; though they don’t bother you because you’re on Joy, like Rain boots do when you are off the drug. During the game you come Beefeaters, Downer Detectors, Spankers, peepersand Headmasters. Each of these Joy Detectors can be tackled in different ways.
Beefeaters
One of the most common detectors you will find are the gated roadblocks called Beefeaters in Hamlyn Village. Depending on which quest you complete, you’ll need to pass it to move through the streets. Next to these gates are control cabinets that you can use a short spike to short circuit them. Be careful doing this; you will be seen and upset a Wellie or Bobby. Wear a Overall to avoid suspicion.
Downer Detectors
The second most common detector are the Downer Detectors. These are mainly found in private homes in doorways or on stairs. Downer detectors can be disabled using a short peak on their safe which was found somewhere in the house. you can’t jump over it or squat below it, so if you pass through it from your Joy, the alarm in the house will go off and attract the attention of the homeowners.
Spankers
Spankers are TVs in the homes of people who detect downers and at least give you a warning with “you must take your joy immediately” and count to 3 before zap you. To take Sunshine to keep them from screaming at you or just ducking out of the room if you can. Alternatively, to avoid shocking the player, if all else fails, wear a Rubber cat suitfound in the Club, prevents electricity from injuring or killing the player. The suit works on both Spankers and peepers.
peepers
Peepers are small balloons that float above the streets in Hamlyn Village. Like the Spankers, they zap you when you get rid of your Joy. You can easily avoid these and Spankers if you buy the stealth ability Technically friendly.
Director
Headmasters are not as common as the other joy detectors. They can be found in the city parks and only zap you when you’re near them. Like Spankers, they count down when you get hit. The Headmistress is the giant humanoid bot that looms over parks. If you don’t use Joy she will tell you to leave before she do you zap. The player only has so much time, because the lines on her body light up one by one, as if she were counting down before attacking the player.
Countering the different joy detectors
There are a few ways to get through this without taking Joy. The player can take Sunshine, a pill that mimics the look of Joy, without the side effects or memory loss. Sunshine can’t be lying around like most other pills, but it can be made or bought.
How to make sunshine
- 1 bleach
- 1 Flour
- 5 Rowan Berry
- 1 empty pill bottle
Sunshine is also possible purchased of the Shady dealerwhose location is random, and the chemist of the Pharmacy at St George’s Holm. Sunshine also prevents Joy Doctors from smelling their Joy’s player.
Remember that there are also certain areas in the game that squirt Joylike playing Simon Says after crossing the Plassey Bridge or in Haworth Labs so wear your gas mask. As an added note, if this all seems like a lot of work and you don’t mind taking Joy, you could also be awarded a PlayStation game trophy for taking too much Joy.
