Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has already been established as incredibly dark and enigmatic based on its tonal cinematic teaser. The fate of the untidy Stinger Mantis crew is unknown, Cal Kestis’ lightsaber is seemingly in the hands of an Imperial Senator and an unidentified person rests suspended in a bacta tank. All this creates a purposeful atmosphere for what? Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s story will present in terms of its themes, but the teaser also contains a major tease on a major gameplay change.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In the teaser’s final shot, Cal has donned a holster that resembled a blaster pistol. This has now been confirmed by an action figure from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s Cal, and has important implications for how the game’s gameplay will look with an additional long-range armament. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was already surprisingly dynamic regarding different playstyles of lightsaber mods, diverse Force abilities, and creative BD-1 mechanics. It seems that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will repeat this with dedicated firefights, which will fundamentally change the way combat is approached.

Gunplay takes Star Wars Jedi: Survivor further away from a Soulslike

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is an amalgam of game genres, including Soulslike. This is due to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order‘s level design and combat structure, with players often flipping around enemy attacks as they struggle to pop healing items and occasionally parry an incoming attack.

The last action is more similar to: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if players parry consecutive time. But the equation stands and FromSoftware’s Soulslike formula is therefore a fantastic design choice for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

It is not known how close Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will follow the combat structure of its predecessor, but fans now know that Cal will equip a blaster pistol at some point in the sequel, which will no doubt repeat on the original game’s combat. Having dedicated gunfights will definitely eschew the actual Soulslike formula a bit too, especially if exchanging blaster fire becomes a substantial part of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s fight.

FromSoftware is certainly no stranger to long-range weapons like bows and kukri, and Bloodborne has a decent number of firearms essential to parry and rip most enemies. Indeed, BloodborneThe more common firearms in the workshop are rarely advisable when dealing damage, except when attempting to carve out splinters of an enemy’s health, especially if players want to keep their distance or if just a little chip damage is destroying their enemy’s health bar will exhaust it completely.

Instead, well-timed firearm attacks will parry an enemy’s incoming attack, leaving them open to another response. It is unlikely that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor‘s blaster of blasters behave similarly, especially considering a generic blaster’s rate of fire and how much damage blaster bolts do in the Star Wars cannon already. Therefore, Star Wars Jedi: SurvivorThe potential Souls-esque design will likely change drastically when a blaster is introduced.

Gunplay Could Make Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Combat More Dynamic

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order did a fantastic job of making gamers feel appropriately powerful by wielding a lightsaber. ignite Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderThe customizable lightsabers allowed players to feel protected from blaster bolts and other hits, but a stamina bar would deflate if they fended off any attack. Once exhausted, Cal’s guard is broken and he falters for a moment.

Still, lightsaber attacks that allow players to land on enemies are also weighted appropriately and quickly aborted depending on the enemy. Players are never placed in a battle scenario without having their lightsaber ready Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderbut it is now almost certainly guaranteed that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will, at some point, force players to part ways with the elegant, civilized weapon.

Star Wars Jedi: SurvivorThe game’s cinematic teaser offered a glimpse of the holstered blaster pistol on Cal’s leg with his lightsaber also strapped to his waist, likely suggesting players will balance the battle between melee and ranged approaches. Hopefully there will be enough logical incentive to use both a lightsaber and a blaster, such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order introduced many abilities that made the lightsaber overpowered, such as the ability to hold a blaster bolt stationary and draw a stormtrooper in its path.

But if players have a blaster of their own, it can deter a melee approach. For example, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderStormtroopers were able to block Cal’s lightsaber attacks with electrically charged batons and such weapons, but with a blaster, these common enemies seem defenseless and easy to defeat.

If Cal’s lightsaber is lost or taken from him during the events of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the introduction of a blaster pistol could make players rethink how to approach each encounter with only a long-range firearm equipped and no way to engage enemies in close quarter combat. However, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor balancing its close-range and long-range combat, equipping a blaster will certainly be a dynamic way to improve gameplay over its predecessor, which focused heavily on a thorough catalog of Force abilities.

Gunplay is happy Respawn’s Bread and Butter

If another Souls-esque or melee-centered action-adventure game introduced gunplay, it could be a bone of contention for fans to scramble for just in case things go bad. Instead, fans may not have to worry about gunfights being poorly implemented in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor if they figure out who the developer is behind it.

Respawn Entertainment is known for the beloved science-fiction shooter franchise Fall of the Titansas well as the hugely popular and free-to-play Battle Royale Apex Legends. So it was more of a drastic gamble for Respawn to try a third-person action-adventure game that centered almost entirely around melee combat. Already well-versed in science fiction, Respawn made the move to the overwhelmingly iconic Star Wars IP tastier, and it now has the ability to integrate its famous firing mechanism into Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

It can be assumed that Star Wars Jedi: SurvivorThe gunfight will be in third person, and it will be interesting to see how that approach is taken from a gameplay standpoint as players can freely switch between a lightsaber and a blaster. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will hopefully have more to share beyond speculation in the near future, and the recently announced Disney and Marvel Games Showcase would be a great stage to reveal its gunfights in official gameplay.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is expected to launch in 2023 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X.
