With its unparalleled animation and presentation quality, the only thing that holds is Dragon Ball FighterZ back in the eyes of many potential players is the online unreliability. Since the game’s release in 2018, the netcode has been shaky at best. Fortunately, rollback netcode was recently announced on Evo 2022, opening the door for many new and returning players to enjoy the culmination of Dragon Ball video games.
It can seem difficult for new players to get into the game, even after completing the long story mode. Every team in DBFZ consists of three characters, which means that players need to know how to play each character and how to balance their composition. Fortunately, many characters share similar combo paths to help new players learn three characters at once, but the team-building aspect is harder to understand. Essentially, every base DBFZ team comes down to three positions: point, center and anchor. The game’s characters often fit easily into one or two of those roles.
Choosing a point character in Dragon Ball FighterZ
The point character of a DBFZ team will be sent out first into battle meaning they will have a limited gauge to start with, they will be able to use multiple assists and they will likely be the first to die. This means that a great point character should be able to deal major damage with a small amount of yards and make good use of assists both during combos and in neutral. The point character will also determine a team’s theme: rushdown, mix-up heavy, defensive, or fundamentally neutral.
The key traits a point character should have are good mix-ups in neutral that come with assists to get the crucial first gambit on opponents, as well as the potential to build a great amount of yards with combos that hit mid-way and anchor characters. can cause massive damage later on. Some examples of powerful point characters are Vegeta, Videl, DBS Broly, and Cell, but most characters in DBFZ can act as a point with proper support. All of these characters build a great meter and work much better with assists to help them.
Choosing a Middle Character in Dragon Ball FighterZ
The middle character in DBFZ is broadcast second and the role is less strictly defined than point or anchor. A good middle character builds on the game plan the point character has set up and can even act as a backup point in case the first fighter is defeated quickly. What separates a mid character from a point character is often access to a powerful assist as the point character will summon mid assists.
Middle characters also generally have more access to meter than dot characters, meaning a great middle character will have powerful combos that use meter to make serious dents in the opposing team. Some examples of powerful middle characters include Master Roshi, Piccolo, Krillin, and Gotenks due to their awesome assists, high damage meter and ability to function as a backup point character.
Choosing an Anchor Character in Dragon Ball FighterZ
The anchor character in DBFZ is arguably the most important role in any team, as it will almost always be the last line of defense against opponents. Since anchor characters often operate solo, they must be able to function without relying on assists or support during combos and neutral. Ideally, an anchor character can also deal massive damage with a lot of yards, as the point and center characters built it up before.
While a good assist is a bonus for anchor characters, it’s not as necessary as it is for middle characters. Anchor characters can make massive comebacks with good solo pressure, neutral and damage. Some examples of good anchor characters include Z Broly, Base Goku, and Tien, all of whom can use meters to obliterate opponents while functioning well without assists. Base Goku, in particular, has a super who is empowered if he’s the last character alive, so he provides a natural anchor.
As with any set of rules, there are exceptions that can be applied to this basic format of a DBFZ team. There are also characters who are so well-rounded that they fit into any role, such as Ultra Instinct Goku and Android 21. While these roles are a good starting point, any new player can DBFZ, especially those with no competitive ambitions, should build their first team around the characters they most enjoy playing, but the roles can be helpful in arranging them within the team to maximize their potential.
