The following article contains spoilers for Thor: Love and ThunderThor Odinson has reached the end of his fourth solo adventure, once again staring death in the eye, when he was forced to part ways with another lover. The God of Thunder is no stranger to grief, as his mother, father, brother and close friends have all passed away in the past. However, fans are hopeful for his future as he channels his energies into raising a child.
In the last moments of love and thunder, Thor seems to be doing much better emotionally, having settled down to live a domesticated life of fatherhood with his adoptive daughter, Love. This new duo will definitely be back in the future as the film’s post-credit scenes confirmed Thor’s return, but Love could be heading off on her own “classic adventure” as the MCU progresses.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has currently produced a mix of very successful and just plain good projects during Phase 4 and currently has no direction. Unlike the first three phases, it’s unclear what the ultimate end goal will be for Marvel’s current heroes, leaving fans to speculate about the future. One possibility circulating on the internet is that the MCU is gearing up to make a Young Avengers movie as many of the originals are being phased out as new blood is brought in. If this is the direction Marvel is headed, it seems like the Young Avengers just found their new Thor.
In addition to his mundane fatherly duties, Thor Love also learns how to fight and protect those who need to be saved. Love plunged into battle confidently alongside Thor, wielding Stormbreaker, to gain some hands-on experience for her hero training. It is also suggested that Love can lift Mjolnir as well, as she took it when Thor wasn’t looking for a face on the side.
Thor is now the second Avenger to take charge of an inexperienced kid, which fans first saw when Clint Barton teamed up with Kate Bishop as they teamed up to take down the tracksuit mafia. As of now, it looks like the remaining members of the original MCU Avengers are taking a break from saving the world, to focus more on their personal lives and work through their grief. It makes sense that Love and Kate would one day completely take over the mantle of their mentors, which is why some viewers suspect that they will both be members of the Young Avengers.
Marvel will also release a show in 2023 titled iron heart, in which the show’s titular character, Riri Williams, will have to grapple with the ramifications of crafting a suit of armor as sophisticated as Tony Stark’s. Drawing on patterns from past projects, it’s clear that the upcoming Disney Plus show will use Marvel’s new teenage genius to take Iron Man’s place.
She-Hulk will premiere in August, and while the series’ lead Jennifer Walters claims she doesn’t want to be an Avenger in the show’s trailer, perhaps another fresh-faced, green character will happily take Bruce Banner’s place. Natasha Romanoff’s sister, Yelena Belova, is more likely involved in the… Lightning strikes film then join the Young Avengers, so a Black Widow replacement is also still needed.
Sam Wilson, meanwhile, has already gotten in touch with another young person since he agreed to become the new Captain America. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier introduced Eli Bradley, aka Patriot in the Marvel Comics. Eli was part of the Young Avengers in the comics, and assuming there’s a Young Avengers movie on the horizon, it only makes sense that he’s the Captain America equivalent.
That said, the Young Avengers team was made up of a very different group of heroes in the comics. If Marvel decides to make a Young Avengers movie, there are two ways they can do it. First, they were able to find replacements for the original six Avengers, as the franchise seems to be doing so far. Alternatively, the MCU can take advantage of the ability to recreate a live-action Young Avengers squad identical to the one in the comics. Multiverse traveler America Chavez, Kid Loki, Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie Lang, and Scarlet Witch twins Billy and Tommy were all members of the Young Avengers in the comic books. These characters have already been introduced to the MCU, so while not all of them are fully super-powered yet, Marvel Studios may be planning to get the comics team back together.
However things go, there’s no denying that many of the original Avengers have worthy successors ready to finish what they started in 2012. As the never-ending stream of outer space threats and multiverse chaos continues, Earth-616 needs heroes to keep the universe safe. So far, Clint and Thor have done an amazing job finding people who are ready to maintain the legacies the Avengers have worked so hard to create.
