Sometimes a simple idea can fill a void in the video game market that many didn’t even know existed. GigaBash is that idea. It is a 3D brawler in which players take on the role of a giant monster – also known as a Kaiju – and take on other monsters while completely destroying the arena in which the battle takes place.
Essentially it is Godzilla vs Kong in the form of a video game.GigaBash does not push the idea further than necessary. The developers of Passion Republic Games took this simple concept and made the most of it, and the game is better for it. Here are the most essential tips to get started for players just starting their Kaiju fighting career.
10 Make use of destructible environments
A gigantic monster fight just wouldn’t be the same if buildings around them didn’t crumble to dust. That said, it’s easy for players to forget that the environments in GigaBash are completely destructible.
This means that whether players hit an enemy into a building or jump on it themselves, that building won’t stick afterwards. Structures are quite easy to topple and therefore no one should feel like they are being hemmed in at any time. If players feel like they’re cornered, just jump on top of the nearest building to free up some space, or better yet, throw an opponent through it.
9 Buildings can be thrown
Taking that distractibility one step further not only allows buildings to be knocked down in a variety of ways, but players will find that they can also pick up buildings and throw them at their enemies.
This is easy to do: just use the grab button, but instead of aiming at an opponent, press it while looking at the nearest building. Then turn to an opponent and press Grab again to throw the building at him. Talk about a power fantasy.
8 Press and hold one of the attack buttons to perform a heavy attack
Every sample in GigaBash has two types of attacks: Basic and Special. Basic attacks are standard punches (or the equivalent if a particular monster has no fists), while special attacks use a monster’s special abilities.
In either case, if players have a few extra seconds to make their attack, they can hold down the attack button and charge to unleash a heavy base attack or a heavy special attack. These attacks deal significantly more damage and will often send enemies to flight. Air strikes can also be charged in the same way.
7 Use Giga-Energy to transform into an S-Class Monster
If they damage opponents or the environment or pick up the small glowing orbs scattered around the map, players will see a pink bar fill up below their health bar. This represents the amount of Giga-Energy collected. Once the bar is completely full, players can transform from a normal monster into an S-Class monster.
The main difference here is that the S-Class’s monsters are twice as large. That means they have more reach, deal way more damage, and can run straight through structures. They can also only be damaged by other S-Class monsters, so keeping a full Giga-Energy meter in reserve is never a bad plan. Beware, when that pink meter runs out, an S-Class monster will revert to its default size and suddenly become a perfect target to bump into.
6 Smash That Giga Ball
During each match, an object called a Giga-ball appears about halfway through. It is a large glowing ball with the giant letter “G” in the center. Players have to race to destroy it as fast as possible as it is actually the GigaBash version of a Super Smash Bros. Smash ball.
Whoever crushes the Giga-ball gets an ultimate attack, unique to their particular monster. These attacks are showstoppers, capable of hitting multiple opponents at once and dealing massive damage to them and the environment. As with any other attack, Ultimate Attacks are a lot stronger when performed by an S-Class monster, which is worth keeping in mind.
5 Don’t forget to block
It’s easy to get caught up in the frenetic Kaiju chaos and just start swinging at anything that moves. However, to really get a head start in battle, it’s important for players to remember to use their blocking skills.
Most incoming attacks from normal monsters can be blocked, including thrown buildings. However, if you block enough damage, a monster’s guard will eventually break. Use Block Attacks to avoid this. Pressing the basic or special attack buttons while blocking will launch a basic or special counter attack, which is great for breaking through enemy combos.
4 Make use of stage gimmicks
Sometimes when a fighting game introduces a gimmick, it just gets in the way of what would otherwise be an enjoyable confrontation. That is not the case in GigaBash. Stage gimmicks become an integral part of any battle when a player knows how to use them.
For example, players can hide in the trees that surround the City Ruin Stage, allowing them to escape from opponents for a short period of stealth. Meanwhile, the Slavagrad map features a rocket that can be propelled into the air when launched and then aimed at other players. These gimmicks are much more than just background noise.
3 Play through the story mode
Though it’s tempting to jump right into a 4-player brawl GigaBash installed, players will find it worthwhile to first enter and complete the very short story mode included with the game.
There are four story campaigns, each targeting a particular monster, and each campaign consists of four missions. They’re a great way to get to grips with the game’s mechanics and stages, but they also unlock several of the game’s 10 playable monsters. The monster roster is fantastically varied and players will be happy with a few more options when choosing their fighter.
2 Play local co-op
While GigaBash can be played solo against AI, or online against virtual opponents, the best experience the game has to offer is when played in co-op on the couch with a few friends.
GigaBash, at its core is a parlor game. It’s extremely easy to just pick it up and play, meaning far more than 4 people can pass a controller and have fun. The on-screen pandemonium only gets wilder when everyone is playing in the same room. It’s also the only way to enjoy one GigaBash’s Best Modes: Mayhem Mode.
1 Don’t ignore Mayhem mode
What is Mayhem Mode? It takes GigaBash formula and throws a Mario party turn on it. Each match comes with a different minigame, each of which will add an extra layer of competition and complexity to the game.
There are some standard additions, such as a thin ice battle where players try to be the last to surface, but there are also some great ideas, such as a Rampage-style showdown where players don’t fight each other as much as they try to be the one who destroys most buildings. Each iteration is a great time and tight GigaBash’s status of party games.
GigaBashwas released on August 4, 2022 and is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
