Puzzles, photography, phenomena of the occult! Madison is an exciting journey through the gruesome mansions that surround the mysteries of Luca and his impending demonic possession.
Puzzles, visions and thrilling sequences make Madison a real treat that will leave you reeling even after the credits. This first person psychological horror brought something new and mysterious to the genre, so it will definitely leave you wanting more. To help you in your quest for some more of that menacing goodness, there are some equally satisfying games to check out.
10 Survive 2
Outlast 2 puts you in the shoes of Blake, equipped with his camera, as he searches for his wife after he crashes somewhere in Arizona. You must face violent cultists, increasingly intense hallucinations, and a steadily depleted camera battery that always poses a threat when you need it most.
If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to sneak your way through a village determined to prepare for the end times, it’s time to visit Temple Gate. Ah, the joys of investigative journalism.
9 witch hour
Witching Hour has five different endings that largely depend on your decisions during the game. You kick things off by moving into your poorer family home that was just abruptly vacated by the tenant you rented it to. You’ll eventually come to a door in the house with a crucifix on it and chains holding it shut, so that’s a very promising welcome.
In this story, you must solve puzzles and make your way to the heart of the city’s powerful witchcraft. The mummy taught us all that “don’t read from the book!”. Luckily, Witching Hour’s main character goes against that sacred rule and you can enjoy this fast-paced horror adventure in return.
8 Devour
Devour takes you through different periods of cult history, with each level featuring a different setting and main antagonist. As the story goes, the Guardians of Azazel have left their past lives to worship the demon Azazel. As expected with demons, he decides to possess the cult leader and try to unleash his anger on the world.
Here you and three other friends can team up to perform a ritual that will stop this great evil. Your membership in the cult will now be compromised, of course, but it’s all worth it, as the fate of the world is at stake. However, Azazel continues to find new hosts, so you can expect more updates that build on the lore.
7 Resident Evil Village
The entire Resident Evil series is known for having huge and imposing villains chasing you throughout the game, and Resident Evil Village keeps that going in an entry that is otherwise quite different from previous titles.
In addition to puzzles, you also have to consider combat while facing the various horrors in this game. Bioterrorism, giant female “vampires”, fish men and rescues that can be few will terrorize you as you try to find your missing child. As if Ethan Winters hasn’t been through enough in Biohazard already.
6 sight
Visage is another title that has cemented itself in the horror gaming scene as one of the best psychological horror indie titles in recent memory. It’s quite beautiful, despite being absolutely terrifying. It can’t hurt that it’s also part of the Game Pass for Xbox and PC.
There are many puzzles to solve here, which can be challenging due to the unique fear and relentlessly tense atmosphere throughout the game. It gets surreal as you try to figure out why ghosts haunt you in this abandoned house.
5 Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Amnesia: The Dark Descent has become a horror classic despite being just over a decade old. Enemy creatures lurk in every corner, but you also have to deal with the darkness and sanity of your own character.
It takes you through a story worth completing, despite the fears you must endure to get there. If you enjoyed the narrow halls, shifts in perception and the distressed protagonist of Madison, this is the next stop.
4 Alien: Isolation
Few games instill the absolute sense of dread like Alien: Isolation does. You play as Amanda, the daughter of the iconic Ellen Ripley. Despite your tough heritage, you’re definitely more vulnerable trying to find your long-lost mother.
While traveling through space stations with unfriendly occupants, you must also avoid being captured by the Xenomorph. As if the cinematic game didn’t rattle enough, the Xenomorph’s AI also learns from your behavior, so you can’t stick to one strategy if you want to live.
3 The Backrooms 1998
The Backrooms 1998 builds on the extensive knowledge of the popular creepypasta, The Backrooms. The goal is simple: hide, explore and escape. Of course, stamina, entities and puzzles hinder you from doing these tasks with ease.
While there are countless games related to The Backrooms, this one stands out in particular for its use of claustrophobia and built-up tension to enhance every jumpscare and the nagging atmosphere of liminal space. Pick this up if you want a fun, found-footage horror item that also listens to your mic. Try not to breathe a challenge, anyone?
2 Layers of fear
Layers of Fear does a remarkable job of creating a unique psychological horror experience. Like Madison, this game manages to create clever scares and interesting ways to change the game when you least expect it.
As you explore, you’ll learn more about your protagonist’s story and why you ended up in this state of near-mania. Keep slipping down the rabbit hole and come face to face with ever-changing locations, dark themes, and doors you won’t want to open.
1 Martha is dead
Martha Is Dead is a psychological horror game that really gets under your skin. It’s an extremely grim setting, smack in the middle of war and loss. Many moments can be hard to bear, but the game is very captivating and the visuals are really captivating.
If you felt like Madison was being too cheeky, you might want to brace yourself for this one. Keep in mind that the PS4 version is even censored, so expect a disturbing six to 10 hours.
