A D&D is the next wave of Dungeons and Dragons products, adding new content to Wizards of the Coast’s legendary table-top RPG. The A D&D trailer reveals that the company is forgoing the use of edition titles, but plans to expand and perfect the existing Fifth Edition ruleset. This may not be a bad move, because Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition has proven to be one of the most popular systems in the game’s long history, and an updated set of rules and character options could maintain that popularity for another decade.
There are three aspects to A D&D. The first is a slew of rule changes and extensions that kick off with updated versions of the Sample Manual, Dungeon Master’s Guideand Player Handbook in 2024. The second is an overhaul of the D&D Beyond website, giving players new tools and features to D&D experience. The final aspect is the D&D Digital Play Experience, an official virtual tabletop that allows players to play online with 3D maps and characters powered by Unreal Engine 5.
The new and updated rules of One D&D
Players don’t have to wait until 2024 to experience the rule changes in the new Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide. Beginning in August 2022, Wizards of the Coast will release monthly or bi-monthly playtesting content so players can get their hands on beta versions of the new rules and features. These Unearthed Arcana items also give players the chance to shape A D&D as it develops, providing feedback and criticism as they play.
The first of these Unearthed Arcana articles is the Character Origins Play Test, which is already available for download to anyone registered on the D&D Beyond website. The playtest includes plenty of new rules focused on backgrounds and race choices. Many of the original Player’s Handbook races have been expanded for the first time with new racial traits, including the ability to choose Small instead of Medium for Humans and Tieflings. In addition, the playtest content also outlines the Ardlings, a brand new race that is influenced by the Higher Planes of existence, just as the devilish Tieflings are influenced by the Lower Planes.
Changes to D&D Beyond
Compared to the playtest content, very little has been revealed so far about the new features coming to D&D Beyond.in A D&D. The main attraction highlighted in the A D&D revealing trailer is the addition of digital and physical product bundles. With these specially priced bundles, players who purchase a physical copy of a resource or adventure book can also access a digital version of that book in D&D Beyond. The first bundle, which contains the upcoming book Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queenis already available on the D&D store.
However, purchasing a physical/digital bundle gives players more than just a digital version of the book in D&D Beyond. They also get all the pre-order benefits that come with that digital content, as well as the ability to use and share any rules it adds through D&D Beyond. It’s this connectivity that allows players to add content directly to the D&D Beyond character creator, making their D&D character options on the new purchase. Players can expect these features to expand as A D&D is being rolled out and it has already been revealed that they will be able to connect their D&D Beyond accounts directly to the new D&D Digital Play Experience.
The D&D Digital Play Experience
Players can all A D&D rule changes and updates via the D&D Digital Play Experience, an official virtual tabletop. Right now, third-party VTTs like Roll20 and Foundry are the most popular way to play D&D fifth edition online. Wizards of the Coast will now step into that field, with a brand new 3D VTT built into Unreal Engine 5. D&D Digital is currently in early development, but images of the A D&D reveal trailer showed players can customize models, battle maps and encounters in a 3D environment. The VTT also uses a tilt-shift camera technique to give the feeling of playing on a real tabletop and to separate D&D Digital from CRPGs.
Unfortunately, players who want to get their hands on the new system will have to wait a long time. While no release date has been given for D&D Digital, the D&D Beyond website reveals that Wizards of the Coast plans to launch a closed beta test of the VTT sometime in 2023. This time frame indicates that the company is aiming for the full release to coincide with the final A D&D rule updates in the 2024 Player Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide.
