The new generation of pokemon is on the way with Scarlet and purple. While only a few official announcements have been made, there is plenty of material to use for speculation. Dozens of rumors about the ninth pokemon generation are circulating online, and some leaks are even confirmed by the latest trailer. However, there are still plenty of potential new features that have yet to be confirmed or denied by Nintendo or Game Freak.
Prior to the latest Pokemon Presents, aspects of Scarlet and purple such as the name of the region, Gym Leaders, the lack of bikes and options for customizing clothing were only suggested by leaks. That said, these are far from the only things mentioned by leakers. From parts of the Paldea region to new Pokemon, there are still plenty of rumors to sift through.
Scarlet and Violet’s Region and Gameplay Information
When it comes to the region and characters, fans have learned the academic side of this new journey, as well as the fact that three different stories underlie their adventure. The Gym Leaders appear to have other jobs or hobbies in addition to their current position in the Pokemon League, such as snowboarding. However, there are still leaks about the region and gameplay that have yet to be confirmed.
For starters, there are reportedly three cities and nine cities in the game. Gyms can apparently be challenged a second time, and a female Psychic-type Gym Leader can be part of the League Challenge. As for the Elite Four, leaks indicate that they consist of a child of an unknown gender, one of the teachers of the newly introduced academies, a woman and one of the Gym Leaders – although probably not the revealed Ice-type Gym Leader Grusha.
An image has been circulated with red, orange, pink, black and purple circles implied to represent the Elite Four types with the exception of the champion who can change based on which version is played. As for other characters, Nemona, Penny and Arven – the latter two recently revealed – will play exclusive roles in Paldea’s three stories. Rumor has it that Penny isn’t using any new Pokemon as she has a preference for the Eevee family. Professor Sada will only appear in Scarlet and Professor Turo will be alone in purplebut the leaks describe them as “not bad,” for whatever that’s worth.
The new region also apparently lacks fishing, Move Reminders, and a nursery, though Pokemon breeding will still be present in an as-yet-stated picnic way. Leaks have suggested that the Move Reminder will be replaced with a menu option like in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which is also rumored to be returning Mass Outbreaks. Finally, DLC and an auction system with NPCs have been leaked.
Rumors of Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet
The new regional Pokedex is rumored to contain over 400 monsters, including Rotom and Eevee, which appear to be the main subject of a bonding subquest. Returning to the games are Alpha Pokemon, albeit with a unique take on size differences, and overworld Shiny Pokemon; but not all Hisuian forms of Legends: Arceus. The only rideable Pokemon is the Legendaries mascot, and players can only be followed outside by their monsters.
In a complete shift of every generation since X and Yit resembles Scarlet and purple will introduce a selection of new Pokemon similar to the third and fourth generations. The games will bring over 120 new creatures to the table, and even more if one includes the new alternate forms, new evolutions for older Pokemon, and DLC. The starters will be around entertainers: Sprigatito will turn into a wizard reminiscent of clowns and even gentlemen, Fuecoco will be based on singers and become a quadruped, while Quaxly will apparently evolve into a dancing peacock. Their final forms are Grass/Dark, Fire/Ghost and Water/Fighting type respectively.
Leakers claim there are no new fossil Pokemon. Plus, no third Legendary has been confirmed, but inspirations for rumored new Pokemon include dogs, frogs, dung beetles, flowers, a sushi-themed dragon, and even car engines or bicycles. There are also rumors of Pokemon based on dolphins and flamingos, two popular species have yet to be well represented in the series.
Tauros and Wooper will be the only regional variants in the game (the latter of which turned out to be a Poison/Ground type), while Primeape, Girafarig, Dunsparce and Bisharp will reportedly receive new evolutions. Meanwhile, Jigglypuff, Amoongus, Misdreavus, Suicune, a pseudo-legendary and an unspecified Gen 2 Pokemon will get brand new “Ancient Forms”, while Delibird, Gallade, Hariyama, as well as another unspecified Gen 2 Pokemon and pseudo-legendary will get “Future Forms”. Volcarona is indicated to have both an ancient and a future form.
There will also presumably be “regional counterfeits,” or convergent Pokemon as leaks call them, that look like old Pokemon, but aren’t the same. Unlike ancient and future forms, they can evolve, exemplified by a water geyser monster similar to Diglett. There are also hints that Krabby is getting his own doppelganger. With some of these leaks already confirmed, time will tell if other things, like the rumored Grass/Fire-type Pokemon, will become reality once players get the experience Scarlet and purple.
Pokemon Scarlet and purple release on November 18 on Nintendo Switch.
