vampires. They are everywhere in fiction, and they are almost as immortal in real life as they are in their stories. Just when people think these leeches are no longer passé, new series, movies, books, or other mediums come out that bring them back. The 1980s had Anne Rice novels, the 1990s had Buffy the Vampire Slayerand the 2000s had Twilight.

They are also generally quite well known. They are either charming but deadly aristocrats who misunderstand undead souls or mindless monsters. Some may even be all three at once. However, some series want to do something different with vampires and the anime call of the night had something else in mind when it introduced the public to Nazuna Nanakusa.

5 She’s a vampire, not a Femme Fatale

Some of the most famous vampires caught on for their charm. It sounds strange, but they look more humane and offer a thrill with their dangers and have charmed both the public and their prey in the universe. It works whether they’re the tormented kind who need sympathy, like Angel in buffyor outright sociopaths with overwhelming power like Dio Brando in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

At first it looks like Nazuna would follow that trope as she invites call of the night‘s protagonist Kō Yamori for a night on the town. She offers him shelter and feeds on him. But Kō lives to tell the story and is not turned around. If anything, Nazuna is embarrassed for being caught. She needed blood, but she also really wanted to cheer Kō. Fun and friendship are more important to her than the tension.

4 It does not matter

Nazuna is also quite nonchalant about being a “night walker.” She doesn’t shout it from the rooftops, but if anyone needs to know her deal as a vampire, she shares the facts with them. It’s pretty familiar ground: They feed on humans for blood to survive, and they’re unusually sensitive to sunlight (but it doesn’t kill them). They are super strong, super fast, can fly, slow aging, heal injuries quickly, etc.

A unique feature of call of the night‘s vampires is that much of their strengths and vulnerabilities stem from their emotions. If they come into contact with an item or figure that was important to them as a human, that emotional connection could reflect and kill them. Nazuna was born a vampire, so she seems immune to this. Although she has other weaknesses.

3 Her quirks

With a lore like that, you wouldn’t blame Nazuna for having a small potion every now and then. She likes beer and often drinks a glass to calm her nerves. While she’s already quite casual with people and likes to befriend even the most vampire-averse, the booze can really ease her inhibitions.

She doesn’t shy away from making gross jokes. She will laugh at Kō and others, or tease them in a sly, somewhat sexual way. Anything to make them blush and cringe. If she needs a laugh, she’ll go for it, and twice as much after she’s had a few pints.

2 Bloodsucking is serious business

The only drink she doesn’t dare to drink is blood. Other vampires in the media would let go of their humanity and suck a person dry in one go. Or they would try to hold onto any lingering parts of their previous selves by avoiding people altogether and getting blood elsewhere. In call of the nightNazuna’s offer comes from a deal she makes with Kō.

The series treats drinking blood as a no-nonsense thing. The advantage is that one participates in plasma. As long as everyone agrees and is clean, there is no problem. Still, the heart eventually gets involved and not just pumping the stuff through the arteries. Kō becomes jealous when Nazuna reveals that she has eaten other random people. Then she becomes just as jealous as Kō is also fed by others. As much as she’d like to say it’s just a physical appointment, that she’s only after what’s in his body, there’s more to it than that.

1 What Does Love Have To Do With It?

Nazuna was too successful in showing Kō how exciting it can be to be a night walker. Tired of his human life, Kō is driven to join her as a vampire. But it takes more than being fed once. He must fall in love with Nazuna and then feed himself to become just like her. That would be good for Nazuna, because Kō spends more time with her and donates blood regularly. It’s not often that a human is chasing a vampire.

But talking about love and romance makes Nazuna recoil more than any crucifix or sacred ritual. She prefers to keep it casual with no strings attached. Largely because raising love makes her blush and feel uncomfortable. And if a vampire falls in love with their feedee, the human dies. So, Nazuna must avoid answering Kō’s feelings or else she might accidentally kill him. If she was aromatic, this would be easy enough. Instead, her emotions are just as complicated as her vampire character.
