rollerdrome isn’t a huge hit like some other indie games this year, but it’s doing well in reviews. There are many things to praise about the experience, including the art style. The design is seemingly inspired by films from the 70s and 80s that center around games of death. The running man is in any case a good example to bring forward.
There are tons of indie games with cel-shaded graphics like this one, but rollerdrome manages to rise above and create its own little niche. The gameplay idea is also worth praising as it combines skate games with something similar to Fortnite. As fun as the game is right now, it could also use some tweaking in a future patch or two.
7 Add multiplayer
There are several ways multiplayer can make rollerdrome better. The first is through a versus deathmatch mode. The overall story centers on the heroin, Kara, taking down waves of competitors in a game of death. Adding online players would be a new take on the battle royale genre and would make sense in the context of the game’s world. In addition, the developers can add or add a co-op mode. It can be fun to take on the campaign with a friend, even if they’re just a robot and not a character like Kara.
6 Needs a photo mode
One of the best things about the game is the visuals. The cel-shaded art style is seemingly inspired by 70s and 80s movie poster art and looks striking in 3D. Best of the visuals are all the colorful explosions that can erupt from battle. The shame of all this is that there is no photo mode in the game.
This seems weird because there is no multiplayer or online component, which is usually why developers are hesitant to include a photo mode. Whether multiplayer is added or not doesn’t matter as photo mode should be at the top of the patch list.
5 Add an endless mode
When multiplayer is added to rollerdrome turns out to be too difficult then other offline modes would be nice to have. Since the game is based on a death match-style scenario, there should be something like a horde mode to tackle. Players can compete for high scores while battling an endless wave of enemies.
The longer they survive, the higher their score can become. The game may even include rewards for high scores, such as cosmetic items. This idea also seems perfect for co-op, but again, if multiplayer is too hard, surviving alone would be just as much fun.
4 Skip the tutorial
The game is not such a complicated idea. It adds weapons to a skating game like the Tony Hawk franchisee. For those who have played a skate game before, those mechanics should feel right at home and the same goes for the shooting mechanics. The tutorials are fun to have for beginners and for those who need a refresher.
However, for experienced players it can be a chore. You can’t skip these segments either, and they pop up sporadically throughout the campaign. They aren’t terribly painful to go through, but it would be nice to have an option to skip them.
3 Add melee
Incredibly, there is no melee attack in this game. Even the biggest hardcore shooters out there love Duty allow players to melee enemies if they wish. All players have in rollerdrome now there are four guns. They’re all fun to use, from the twin pistols to the harpoon-style sniper rifle.
However, giving players a melee option would broaden the combat even more. Sometimes it’s nice to get a melee kill in a shooter because it can feel more visceral. The developers don’t need to add a robust combo system to rival that of god of war. A simple punch or blow with a gun would suffice.
2 Weapons must use separate ammunition
As great as the four weapon choices are, there’s one problem besides the lack of contact. All four weapons use the same amount of ammunition and the number of bullets is different for each round. For example, the grenade launcher contains two rounds, while the pistol has twelve.
Using one grenade from a grande launcher will use half of the gun’s ammunition. One of the best strategies to use in a shooter is to clear a gun’s clip and then quickly switch to another gun to continue the bloody mayhem. Taking that option away from players can feel strange to shooter veterans. Therefore, a patch should fix this by making these ammunition types separate.
1 Add more costumes
Kara wears a red jumpsuit throughout the campaign. After players are done rollerdrome, they will unlock a new campaign taking place a year later. Kara will instead wear a black jumpsuit while participating in remixed stages.
Giving her one new outfit is all nice and good, but it would be better if players could more easily customize Kara from the start. A simple color menu would be a nice feature to have. Another idea would allow players to completely change their avatar by playing as one of the sniper-style assassins instead. This idea would make the most sense in multiplayer mode, but it’s worth mentioning in this section nonetheless.
rollerdrome was released on August 16, 2022 and is available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
