Sometimes the best companion in a video game is someone who doesn’t talk and, most importantly, doesn’t judge. In that regard, no better video game companion fits the criteria better than animals or pets. They may not have the same level of humanity as the human companions, but they are usually preferred because they can be cuter.
strayed, one of the most recent titles with an animal protagonist, took this up a notch by starring a cat. But before that title, many video game animals or pets were in the spotlight more than the playable protagonist himself. In any case, these pets have proven themselves to be capable cuties, despite having little to no dialogue or humanity in them.
8 Palico – Monster Hunter Series
Monster Hunter Rise may have introduced dogs as companions alongside the Palico cats, but the latter is still more desirable as a fellow assistant hunter. These anthropomorphic cats allow players to “de-steam”, track down monsters and keep their masters alive by throwing healing globs or equipment from time to time.
They may not be the most reliable helpers in the game (due to the randomness of their AI while hunting), but it’s hard to stay mad at them for missing that healing window due to their inherent craziness. So even if they don’t function as intended, they are still a big part of the hunt. Moreover, they are the reason why the players are not eaten by monsters; they practically drag the players into carts after a monster takes them out.
7 BD-1 – Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
BD-1 is a robot and not an animal, but let’s not differentiate here. He is just as good a pet or companion as anyone else. Because unlike the organic pets in video games, BD-1 doesn’t mind being burned or sucked up by the vacuum of space. In addition, it can be compact. A droid companion to Cal Kestis, BD-1 also makes a strong contribution to the Rebel Alliance’s war effort.
As a droid, he has most of the usual droid abilities present in the Star Warsmovies. BD-1 can hack doors and elevators, zap enemies and search for hidden things. He’s not as cuddly as the other pets here, but that’s easily forgiven, as BD-1 can still be cute with all the droid purrs and squeaks he can do, along with timid gestures.
6 Boah / Alright Girl / My Horse 2 – Red Dead Redemption 2
There can only be one horse to make way for other types of video game pets, which admittedly makes it a tough choice. There’s Roach in The Witcher 3 or Epona in The Legend of Zeldabut the prize goes to “Boah” or “alright Girl” – according to Arthur Morgan’s southern accent in Reddead Redemption 2.
Because Arthur’s horse is who the players want them to be. They could even be called anything (but it’s mostly My Horse 2 for those who are lazy). It’s just that Arthur prefers to call them “boah,” regardless of the name. The horse anyway Red Dead Redemption 2is an endearing one because players can deepen their bond with them; they can also die permanently and the players will carry the saddle of their dead horse as they go back to camp crying.
5 Dog Meat – Fallout 3
Of course, not to be outdone by cats, dogs are also included here. And when it comes to dogs in gaming, Dogmeat from Fallout 3 is one of the best. Because a dog’s smile and loyalty is a breath of fresh air when the world has ended and everything is in ruins.
And Dogmeat isn’t just for companionship or cuddly; he can fight too. In fact, he is one of the more effective companions in Fallout 3 and even in the following games. Dogmeat’s backstory is also tragic; he lost his owner to raiders and thus shares something in common with the players. If you don’t kill Supermutants and ghouls, Dogmeat can even get some ammo and loot for the players.
4 ‘Dog’ – Half-Life 2
‘Dog’ by Half-life 2 is not really a domesticated dog, but a giant robot programmed with a dog’s behavior patterns. It makes sense in this video game universe because Dog was created by Dr. Eli to guard his daughter Alyx and keep her company, as he is a busy scientist. It’s safe to say Dog has largely fulfilled his purpose.
It’s not that hard for him to do his programmed task as he is one of the strongest robots in the game and can even take out alien walker tanks called Striders. And not only is he loyal to Alyx, Dog extends this loyalty to Alyx’s friends as well, so the players get unlimited pets and lifesaver coupons from Dog.
3 Trico – The Last Guard
Turns out giant hybrid beasts make great pets too, hence the whole premise of: The last guard. The story of the game is told as a flashback by an old man who remembers how he once formed an unbreakable bond with the most unlikely creature imaginable.
That would, of course, be Trico, who is an amalgam of many animals, but multiplied by his size by 20. Trico is an invaluable pet and companion for the boy (players), as he will have to solve puzzles using their size differences. While Trico’s stubbornness can sometimes cause the adventure hiccups, it doesn’t detract from the beast’s cuteness.
2 Ikaros – Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
Icarus comes out like eagle Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey already has a good advantage over other pets. He can fly which makes him a lot faster and more mobile. But that’s only part of what makes Ikaros hard to replace. Because he himself is an in-game mechanic.
Ikaros acts as a drone of sorts for both Alexios and Kassandra. Somehow he can link his eyes to one of those demigods and give them a literal bird’s eye view of an area. Ikaros can also make the enemies and resources visible to them on the mini-map. Props to Ubisoft for adding more context to an in-game mechanic that is usually taken for granted.
1 Pikachu – Pokemon Yellow
And of course, the most popular rodent in video game history (besides Mickey) deserves to be here. Pikachu, specifically that of Pokemon Yellow is a special one. It is the same pokemon title derived from the anime. Hence the Pikachu in the pokemon anime has practically the same personality as this one.
He is a stubborn and somewhat independent Pokemon that does not want to go into the Pokeball and prefers to be carried by his trainer. This Pikachu is immediately an ideal pet. Furthermore, he also refuses to evolve, probably to maintain his cute appearance as the vain but sweet rodent that he is.
