The nemuidere archetype, while not as popular as the other character types like the yandere or the tsundere, is still quite endearing among fans. Mostly found in anime, the nemuidere archetype is also present in the large repertoire of JRPGs; the term itself is derived from “nemui” (meaning sleepy in Japanese) and “deredere” (meaning lovey-dovey).
A character who is a nemuidere can be easily identified by their habit of sleeping for long periods of time for whatever reason. Whatever role they play in the game, these perpetually sleepy ladies remain some of the best characters in their respective games, largely defined by their love of sleep.
7 Caitlin (Pokemon Black & White)
The strength of Caitlin, arguably the most powerful member of the Unova Elite Four, is easily hidden by her elegant looks and sleepy mannerisms. She is clearly looking for skilled opponents and even advises the player not to give her a “snooze-inducing battle” when challenging her for the first time.
In Pokemon Black and White, it is revealed that Caitlin’s room in the Pokemon League has a chic bed with gold curtains, leaving little to the imagination as to how she spends her time outside of combat. Initially annoyed at waking up, Caitlin eventually recognizes the player’s strength after being defeated.
6 Karina (Rune Factory 3)
Although Karina is one of the smarter characters in Runic Factory 3, she is also one of the laziest. Instead of doing her chores at her family’s store, Karina can take naps, a habit that often leads to heated arguments with her mother.
Even when it comes to other menial tasks, Karina will go out of her way not to perform them because she does not want to exert herself more than she would like. But when Karina gets close to Micah, she finds in him someone worth working for, as well as the motivation to try new things in life.
5 Futaba Sakura (Person 5)
Futaba, the navigator of the Phantom Thieves, is known as a hermit and has isolated herself in her room due to her mother’s death. Because of this isolation, Futaba’s physical stature is very weak, to the point that she will sleep for days if left unchecked. Even her stepfather Sojiro admits that her sleep pattern is the norm, despite his efforts to get Futaba out of her room.
However, after bonding with the player, Futaba slowly begins to open up to other people. She begins to show a more playful side of her by messing with her fellow Phantom Thieves, though her discomfort with unfamiliar social environments still exists.
4 Tiki (Fire Emblem series)
Present since the first game in the fire emblem series, the innocent and childlike Tiki is most famous for being Naga’s daughter, as well as her millennia-long sleep. Though Tiki hates having to sleep over, but clings childishly to Marth and Bantu, she must do this to keep her potentially continent-destroying power at bay.
While Tiki may have been more innocent in the first game, Fire Emblem: Awakening sees her as more restrained, with a more realistic view of the world now that two millennia have passed. She longs to see her friends from the past again and even sees bits of “Mar-Mar” in Lucina, but she decides to start new relationships to ease her loneliness.
3 Sayu (Genshin impact)
Sayu, a resident ninja of Shuumatsuban, has arguably the purest reason for sleeping out of all the nemuidere characters in gaming. She is obsessed with her height and operates in the belief that she will grow taller if she gets enough sleep.
Sayu’s goals may be pure, but she’s not above sleep to avoid her ninja responsibilities. As a result, her laziness has become quite notorious among Shuumatsuban. Despite this, the other villagers still have great respect for Sayu’s abilities, suggesting she may be missing a real target.
2 Seimei (Senran Kagura: New Wave)
While the other girls at Hanzo academy are happier and more energetic, Seimei can usually be found sleeping wherever she wants. Oddly enough, her dreams serve as visions that present her with a terrifyingly accurate prediction of future events.
Although Seimei is rarely seen wide awake, she is willing to fight if the situation calls for it; true to her personality, she has no problem fighting in her pajamas. Her weapon of choice is an insanely large rocket launcher, a flashy weapon that contrasts sharply with her eternally sleepy personality.
1 Meru Myoujou (1bitHeart)
Meru Myoujou is one of the last characters Nanashi can befriend. As an employee at an accessories store, Meru’s behavior is borderline narcoleptic; she often falls asleep during her shifts and has trouble carrying on a conversation due to falling asleep and sleeping.
Meru’s conversations with Nanashi revolve around the latter trying to change her sleep schedule, even taking her to a psychiatrist for help. Her favorite gifts are anything that stimulates the senses, namely the Rainbow Afro, Teeny Bikini and the Palm Mix, the first two of which suit the nature of her day-to-day work.
