It may seem like Steam is primarily for buying video games, and for the most part it is. Steam has become the most popular PC game distribution platform and the easiest way to download games to your computer. However, many people may not know that movies can be downloaded through Steam as well.
Admittedly, Steam doesn’t really have a huge collection of movies to collect, even in a genre as entertaining as action. But despite his focus as a curator of games, there are still a handful of great, recognizable, and even iconic titles that can be purchased through the distributor.
5 Reservoir Dogs
Quentin Tarantino’s first time in the director’s chair turned out to be a success, as Reservoir Dogs has become one of the director’s most iconic films. The film follows a group of criminals who plan a robbery at a jewelry store. After the heist goes horribly wrong, the group reunites and assumes that one of them must be an undercover cop; the rest of the film follows them as they tear each other apart, often with violent consequences.
Though not as action packed as Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs is still gory and exciting. Famous kickstart of the popularity of non-linear storytelling in movies, Reservoir Dogs flashes back and forth from before and after the heist, constantly balancing the quiet bits and the high tension. Even after thirty years, Reservoir Dogs is still intriguing and exciting.
4 Ghost in the shell
Now considered one of the best and most influential anime movies of all time, Ghost in the shell is based on the manga of the same name and can be rented or purchased through Steam. Set in Japan in the year 2029, it follows a cyborg security agent as she hunts down a mysterious hacker who can rob people of their memories.
Visually stunning and rich in meaning, Ghost in the shell quickly became a cult classic despite its initial poor performance at the box office. It features some of the most exciting and iconic action sequences ever animated, and like all the best sci-fi movies, it explores themes of advanced technology and self-identity. Ghost in the shell influenced many popular filmmakers such as James Cameron and the Wachowskis.
3 John Wick
Starting a brand new franchise and reviving Keanu Reeves’ career, John Wick is undoubtedly one of the most iconic films to come out of the 2010s. Keanu Reeves plays the titular John Wick, a former hit man who, after settling in, is given a puppy by his recently deceased wife. When men break into his house and kill the puppy, John Wick vows to hunt them, only leading to an endless series of violent and exciting encounters.
The filmmakers behind John Wick knows better than anyone how to put together an action set that will stick with the audience for years to come. John Wick is an unstoppable killing machine; the excitement comes not from whether he will survive, but how crazy the action can get. Yet John Wick always feels like it knows exactly what it is, making it an unforgettable entry into an ongoing franchise.
2 Half-Life: The Freeman Chronicles
While Half-Life: The Freeman Chronicles was released episodically on Steam, they flow together nicely as a short film set in the half-life universe. A non-profit fan-made series, The Freeman Chronicles is a live-action remake of the events of the first half-life game, in which they follow Gordon Freeman and fellow guards and scientists as they try to survive zombies and soldiers during the infamous Black Mesa incident.
Positively received by half-life creators Mike Laidlaw and Gabe Newell, The Freeman Chronicles is likely that the closest fans will come to a live-action adaptation of the half-life spell. This action-packed spectacle is very well put together for a fan-made movie, with great production values and a protagonist who somehow looks exactly like Gordon Freeman (and unlike his video game counterpart, he can actually talk). What’s more, the total running time is somewhat short – about thirty minutes in total – and all three episodes are free. There’s really no reason why half-life missing fan.
1 John Wick: Chapter 2
Following up on an action movie with a worthy sequel is hard enough, but John Wick has grown into a franchise that is seemingly unstoppable as the title character. Not long after, John Wick picks up where the first movie left off and is dragged back into his criminal life to pay a debt he owes to an Italian crime boss. However, after arriving in Italy, he soon finds out that a bounty has been put on his head, with every criminal wanting the chance to kill John Wick himself.
Rather than simply being a rerun of the first movie, Chapter 2, as the title implies, really continues John Wick’s seemingly never-ending story. What’s even more exciting, though, is the thrilling action. Chapter 2 doubles its over-the-top and extravagant decors that de John Wick franchise a concept. Aside from the well-choreographed action, Chapter 2 expands on the intriguing lore of the first film and also leads perfectly into the thrilling third installment, released in 2019.
