Secrets and Easter eggs have been a part of gaming since time immemorial. Developers love to sneak into their games cheeky tidbits that can be quite a joy for avid gamers to discover. Everything from weird secrets to custom weapons are candidates in this regard, with some developers trying their best when it comes to integrating secret weapons into their video games.

As a result, certain weapons in video games become so secretive that most players don’t even find them, which is a shame. The following weapons are great examples of great and powerful secrets hidden in the game that players haven’t actually found, either because their criteria are just too hard to complete, or because they’re so well hidden that most people don’t even realize took the trouble to check.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

8 Excalibur II (Final Fantasy 9)

The Final Fantasy series is notable for having secret weapons that can be absolutely tricky to find, with some also requiring their full potential to be unlocked. One of the hardest weapons to find in gaming comes in the form of the Excalibur II from Final Fantasy 9.

To get this weapon, players need to speed up the game and reach the last dungeon in 12 hours. Considering how long Final Fantasy 9 is, it goes without saying that most people couldn’t achieve this, especially since the game doesn’t provide hints either.

7 Golden Cannon (GoldenEye 007)

GoldenEye 007 is one of the most important video games ever made. It confirmed the fact that shooters didn’t have to live on PC alone, with its great single player and revolutionary split-screen multiplayer allowing gamers to enjoy this title for hours.

During one of the levels, players can find a Golden Gun behind a trunk that is locked unless a difficult tile puzzle is completed. There is no solution to this puzzle suggested anywhere in the game, and players will be barred from getting this gun as a bunch of enemies invade out of nowhere.

6 Rakuyo (blood)

Of all the weapons on this list, the Rakuyo is a weapon that most players have ever tried to acquire. However, the difficulty of getting this weapon is so enormous that a lot of players give up instead of putting themselves through this torture.

To get the Rakuyo, players must: fight two shark giants at once, which are easily the toughest regular enemy in the game. Fighting with just one of them is as challenging as it gets, but trying to get two is downright impossible, forcing players to give up in their quest for Lady Maria’s incredible weapon.

5 Balder Side Sword (Dark Souls)

It seems that FromSoftware games tend to make certain great weapons downright impossible to obtain. That’s the case in the original dark soulswhere the coveted Balder Side Sword can only be obtained as rare 1% drop in a Balder Knight.

This causes many players to try to grind out this weapon, but this process becomes infinitely frustrating after a point. The fact that some players were just lucky and got this weapon in their very first run makes the rarity of the Balder Side Sword even more painful for dark souls veterans.

4 Peacekeeper (Battlefield 1)

The requirements to unlock the Peacekeeper in Battlefield 1 are absolutely ridiculous and show why so many people didn’t even bother to get their hands on this weapon. The grind is just too heavy to bear.

Players must: decipher eight unique Morse code messages before going through all the cards to try and pay this tribute to Metal Gear Solid. The Peacekeeper might be a cool weapon to show off, but players will have to put in a lot of time and effort to get this flashy pistol.

3 Hand cannon (dead space 2)

Dead space 2 is not a game that many people can endure to play over and over again. This is especially true in the case of the game’s highest difficulty setting, where players will see more gory deaths than they’re in the mood for.

Players must unlock the Hard Core difficulty by playing the game once, and complete another playthrough in this nightmarish environment with their sanity intact. This gives them access to the hilarious Hand Cannon weapon, which absolutely wipes out the necromorphs in the game with one shot.

2 Onion Knight (Final Fantasy 10)

Onion Knight is Lulu’s celestial weapon that can be obtained in Final Fantasy 10. However, it is pretty useless at first and needs some work to unleash its true potential.

While the tasks required to unlock each character’s Celestial Weapon power can be quite arduous, Lulu’s task takes this to a whole new level. Players must: dodge the lightning bolts in the Thunder Plains no less than 200 times in a row to get the Venus Sigil. Since there is no in-game counter, players must count each individual dodge and not miss a single beat.

1 Hadouken (Mega Man X)

The Hadouken is more of a skill than a technique, but it’s still on the list given the way combat works Mega Man X. Considering how ridiculous the steps are to unlock this weapon, it more than makes up for these minor technicalities.

To get the Hadouken, players must: collect all upgrade capsules, heart tanks and sub tanks in the game, which is a huge task in itself. All bosses prior to Sigma must be defeated before players move to a secret location in the armored armadillo stage. Players need to grab the health pod here four times, and reaching this area with full health on the fifth attempt will instead trigger Hadouken to spawn.
