Diablo Immortal has been the source of controversy since it was announced at Blizzcon 2018. It was the first new diablo title since Diablo 3 in 2012 and fans expected it to not be a mobile game. The announcement was met with a negative response and it sparked the infamous “don’t you have phones?” meme. The game started drumming up bad PR before it was even released, but it would get worse.

Diablo Immortal was finally released in June and had the biggest launch in franchise history. Players soon discovered the predatory microtransactions baked into it. If players want to reach the highest levels of power in the game, by far the easiest way is to spend real money. Players can purchase buffs and modifiers to speed up their progress, and the game also offers loot boxes containing items that are not easy to obtain.


These loot boxes contain all kinds of items, including legendary gems. If players don’t want to spend a lot of time sifting through these items, they can buy loot boxes. Some players have done the math and found that it can take up to $110,000 to get their Diablo Immortal characters, and that has caused some controversy within the gaming community. Still, there have been players willing to spend the money and that has given Blizzard reason to keep its model.

Warcraft Arclight Rumble Must Tread Carefully
