Platform battle fans have been busy for the past few weeks battling it out in Warner Brothers’ new crossover fighting game MultiVersus. The title has brought some of the world’s most iconic characters under the same roof to compete against each other for victory. It finally answers questions not many people asked, such as whether Iron Giant is stronger than Arya Stark, whether Finn man stands a chance against the mighty Superman, and whether Bugs Bunny would be able to take on Morty Smith. It has created one of the wildest characters for a fighting game and Player First Games is just getting started.

The concept of MultiVersus is strongly inspired by, among other things, Super Smash Bros. ultimate, in which some of gaming’s most iconic characters battle it out for ultimate glory. Characters like Mario and Sonic can take on Solid Snake, Samus and even Minecraftis Steve. Warner Brothers hopes to match that level of success and popularity with MultiVersus, but there’s another kind of crossover game from Nintendo that could fit into Warner’s large catalog of IPs. While it recently started attracting characters from outside the Mario franchise, Mario Kart offers a different type of crossover game that could work very well with the characters of Warner Brothers.

Mario Kart clones are everywhere

So many studios seem to want to jump on the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate train with their own characters. Games like MultiVersus, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, brawlhallaand Rivals of Aether have all tried the success of Super Smash Bros. crossover fighting model, but that’s not the only Nintendo game studios want to copy. Over the years, the game industry has spawned a lot Mario Kart clones that have brought together all kinds of IPs in the racing genre. These were all of varying quality and almost none of them managed to reach the heights of Nintendo’s kart racing title, but they all tried to put their own spin on the fun gameplay.

Kartrace fans have been able to race as characters like SpongeBob in the Nickelodeon Kart Racers series or race against the Sonic schedule inside Team Sonic Racing. The Crash Bandicoot characters had some racing fun by Crash Team Racingand even Disney liked it with Disney Speedstorm. While not all of these games have been a hit, they all have shown that the industry and the players seem to really like the game Mario Kart formula.

Mario Kart‘s immense appeal can be seen in the sales figures for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe alone. These games seem much easier to pick up and play than a Smash Bros. clone, because the gameplay is just more accessible. Players just have to learn how to drive the car, and they can have a fighting chance against those who have been playing for much longer. The courses are also a lot of fun to navigate, and the gameplay can get very wild very quickly. In addition, the game features a colorful cast of iconic characters that players have come to love, which is something the Mario Kart clones have attempted to deliver.

Mario Kart is a great next step for Warner Bros

MultiVersus has brought together all kinds of Warner Brothers characters, and a Mario Kart clone could do the exact same thing. Put players in control of characters such as Harry Potter, Superman, Rick Sanchez or Velma and have them race around crazy tracks. They could ride through the streets of Gotham City, through the lands of Middle-Earth, through the halls of Hogwarts, and even above the Citadel of Ricks. A developer can throw in some items, wild looking karts and fun sound effects, and it can be a decent one Mario Kart title.

The number of players of MultiVersus shows that players are interested in a game filled with Warner Brothers’ IPs, and that it could potentially be ported over to a crossover kart racer. The new genre could attract even more players who aren’t interested in the fighting genre, and it could bring even more focus to some of WB’s lesser-known franchises. It can also help to Mario Kart-shaped hole that exists outside the Switch, as long as it maintains the same level of quality that MultiVersus has.

MultiVersus is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S
