The lands of Westeros have dominated the fantasy TV landscape for years. Viewers were taken on a wild adventure through eight seasons of the critically acclaimed Game of Thronesand now get ready for even more stories with House of the Dragon. While the end of Game of Thrones was controversial, his world and stories are still considered some of the best fantasy has to offer. It is so successful that HBO has plans to expand the world further with several spin-offs in different stages of production.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While Game of Thrones has had huge success on HBO, it has always struggled to break into the video game market. There have been a few video games that take place in Westeros, but none of them have been as well received as the shows. The series has had quite an interesting relationship with the video game industry and the success of House of the Dragon will most likely lead to even more attempts to capture the feel of this fantastic world.

A Game of Thrones Genesis

A Game of Thrones Genesis was one of the first non-browser-based video games in the world of A song of ice and fire. The game takes place in more than 1000 years of Westeros history and tells the origin of various kingdoms that can be found all over the country. Developed by Cyanide Studios in a strategy genre, it hit shelves during the first season of HBO’s adaptation. Players took control of various armies and would do anything they could to preserve the Iron Throne, even going online to battle against seven other players. It looked like it would be a recipe for success, but the game received very mixed reviews and is currently mostly negative on Steam. A Game of Thrones Genesis has had no impact whatsoever and has been largely forgotten.

Game of Thrones

Cyanide was not deterred by the reception of Genesisas it was released Game of Thrones a year later. Rather than being a strategy game, Game of Thrones took over action RPG mechanics and put players in control of two different inhabitants of Westeros: Alester Sarwyck and Mors Westford. The game told a brand new story during the events of Game of Thrones season 1, and it featured a number of actors reprising their roles from the show. The player went on a high stakes adventure and the game had four different endings.

Game of Thrones also included a number of DLC packs that further expanded the world of Westeros and told stories that took place before the main events. The game also received mixed reviews upon release, but has managed to earn a mostly positive review on Steam. Right now it’s the only PC RPG set in this universe and as such it holds a special place in the hearts of many Westeros fans.

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

After Cyanide failed to impress with its Westeros games, Telltale dove in to deliver a fun story-driven title set in the fantasy world. Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series told a brand new story about the unknown House Forrester in the time between the show’s third and fifth seasons. Players took control of five different members of House Forrester spread across Westeros. They would be given choices that affect the future of the house and the fate of all these characters, making for a pretty exciting story.

Many characters also found their way from the show to Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series with actors reprising their roles. The game consisted of six different episodes, but a planned sequel never materialized. It was praised for its storytelling, even though the rest of the game didn’t live up to that quality, but it’s since been pulled from stores with no news about whether it’ll ever be back. For now, Game of Thrones fans should turn to other games to get their Westeros fix.

The Game of Thrones mobile games

Outside of the above three titles, the majority of Game of Thrones video games have all been relegated to mobile platforms or web browsers. There have been quite a few mobile games that took advantage of the Game of Thrones name, covering a wide variety of genres. Some of them have been ported to PC or other platforms, but the majority just exist as mobile games.

Game of Thrones enter the mobile market and browser-based games with the strategy title in 2013 Game of Thrones Ascent. Players took control of an underage house and tried their hardest to build their power in this point-and-click game. They would compete against other players in PvP modes and build huge alliances. The game was closed in 2019 without explanation.

Game of Thrones Conquest took another strategic spin on the franchise, Reigns: Game of Thrones players had to swipe cards to make choices for their character, Game of Thrones Slots brought the series to the casino, and Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall put players in control of the Nights Watch for mobile strategy fun. More mobile games are on the way as Netmarble is working hard on a brand new experience.

Mobile development seems to be the future of Game of Thrones, as there’s no indication that a full-fledged console or PC game is on the way. The series has yet to break into the industry with a title as groundbreaking as HBO’s series, but fans hope it will soon. Another studio may try with the release of House of the Dragonor maybe that will pave the way for even more mobile games on Westeros.
