Heroism is overrated. Some gamers just want to kill, steal and judge themselves. Fortunately, not all games force players into morally good actions, some RPGs offer glimpses of the bad side – usually through rude dialogue, which is still mild. Other more extreme examples are given by more memorable titles that weren’t afraid to portray the negatives.

Certain games allow for unparalleled levels of moral ambiguity, allowing them to commit all kinds of banditry, delivering a definitive RPG experience. Those who are tired of saving the world again and again only for the NPCs not to recognize their hero status might as well dump their karma to different levels of hell in these video games.

Skyrim in itself doesn’t exactly reward players if they choose to be bandits. Certain actions have consequences and players can easily lock themselves out of cities if they kill and steal too much. But even that kind of playstyle is still viable in this age-old RPG.

With mods, however, being a bandit in Skyrim becomes even more viable or accessible. Granted, the base game still lets players do whatever they want, minus some non-destructible NPCs, but mods let players experience the real-world consequences, rewards, and representation of banditry.

7 Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 have plots that continue to force the players into a good or morally commendable role. That’s why for players who want as much undescribed character as possible for a more believable transition to banditry, Fallout: New Vegas is the more appropriate game.

Players take on the role of a protagonist who has been wronged by several men and is now out for revenge. It gets more morally ambiguous than that and puts players on a life of banditry in case they want more freedom in the RPG aspect of the game.

6 Mount & Blade 2: Banner Lord

  • Publication date
    : 2020

  • Platforms
: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S

Mount & Blade 2: Banner Lord is one of the most compelling and faithful representations of feudal life in the Middle Ages. Thus, players can fulfill their dreams of being a lord, mercenary, merchant and of course bandit, among many other life paths in the above-mentioned time period.

It’s one of the few RPGs that actually lets players decide who they want to be rather than just putting them in preset or predictable roles. If players want to raise an army that runs through the countryside looting and murdering the domain of a rich, fat feudal lord, they are free to do so. That’s assuming they can handle the retaliation.

5 Red Dead Redemption 2

    : 2018

  • Platforms
: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows, Stadia

Red Dead Redemption 2 is more of an action-adventure game, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have role-playing potential. Because first and foremost it’s a game to be a bandit. For those who have never heard of the game, it is set towards the end of the 1800s when the US cleared out the last of its bandits with advancing civilization and urbanization.

Players take on the role of Arthur Morgan, the right-hand man of the Van der Linde gang, as they navigate the civilized landmines of North America in the late 1800s. It’s not difficult to commit banditry in the game – even most missions require players to break the law. But even without missions, players can still rob, kill, and kidnap people whenever they want; it’s pretty definitive as far as bandit roleplaying goes.

4 Tyranny

  • Publication date
    : 2016

  • Platforms
: Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, Classic Mac OS

Tyranny takes a bolder direction compared to most other CRPGs. It starts players as an accomplice of an evil conqueror who has already won from the heroes and good powers of the game world. As such, players are initially the villains of the game. They can then form their party and decide whether they want to keep doing bad things and follow orders or rebel. There are more choices in the game of different moral ambiguity.

But since this is a part about bandit role-playing, players will want to keep doing the bad things in Tyranny. They can rob and kill peasants, while also setting fire to their houses and further oppressing them, not unlike ordinary banditry, but legalized and on a grander scale.

3 Fight against brothers

  • Publication date
    : 2015

  • Platforms
: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5

Fight against brothers looks like the Mount & Blade games, except that the focus is on letting you experience mercenary life in a medieval setting. The backdrop is a gritty, low-power fantasy world where players can decide where to go and who to fight against.

For this they need a significant army and luckily the game allows them to recruit members and take them into their warband. Battles are mostly turn-based, but beyond that, the game has some heavy RPG elements and allows players to loot and loot in a procedurally generated world.

2 Kenshi

Kenshi is one of the weirdest and most unique online survival game titles. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where even the environment can kill players if they just stand still. In Kenshiplayers can do whatever they want from a prisoner, a slave driver, a vagabond, a cleric, a merchant, or just anyone who enjoys the safety and limits of civilization.

Incidentally, here players can also become bandits where they can kill other players and steal their limbs or their other possessions, whether organic or not. There is no shortage of creative activities to do in Kenshi and banditry is just one of them.

1 rubber bandits

  • Publication date
    : 2021

  • Platforms
: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5

Now, for something a little more casual and doesn’t necessarily require players to kill and rob people in poverty, then rubber bandits offers a more casual experience. It is a multiplayer game similar to the Autumn guys. Here, however, the player and three others will race against the clock to loot, hurt and fight others as much as possible.

Whoever commits the most crimes wins. Think of it as a PG brand of banditry, just like Disney portrays pirates in cartoons. Still, everyone will undoubtedly have a good and happy time in this competitive casual game. Needless to say, this bandit game is something parents can play with their kids.
