While Hinata is the main catalyst for Takemichi’s journey into the past, Mikey is still central to the series’ main conflict. The fearless leader of Tokyo Manji Gang is a complex character with many layers in his personality. For any Tokyo Revengers fans curious about the famous kid-leader, here are some fun facts that maybe not everyone already knows about Mikey Sano.

7 He has a sweet tooth

A big part of Mikey’s overall charm is his childish attitude. Like a carefree child, Mikey often enjoys sweet treats; namely traditional Japanese pastries. Mikey’s favorite desserts are, of course, his beloved dorayaki (which he sulks at after accidentally dropping it from his mouth during a fight) and taiyaki.

Mikey seems to really love azuki (sometimes spelled “adzuki”) bean paste, as dorayaki is a pastry made up of two pancake-like patties sandwiching sweet azuki bean paste in the middle. His second favorite, taiyaki, also uses sweet adzuki bean paste as a filling, stuffed into a fish-shaped pastry.

6 There is no one he looks up to but himself

While it may sound a little selfish at first, Mikey is one of the few people who can really support all the big talk he’s capable of. According to the first official character book, Mikey is not afraid of anyone and respects and admires himself. Everyone in the Tokyo Manji Gang has someone they look up to, and for most it’s their leader, Mikey (and for good reason).

Mikey can be a little unhinged at times, but given the trauma and hardship he’s been through, he’s quite a strong character, mentally and physically. Despite being a little broken inside, Mikey still fights on and has no intention of showing his weaknesses. While even the main villain, Draken, looks up to Toman leader Mikey, Mikey considers no one else above him.

5 He can fall asleep almost anywhere

A day in the life of Mikey seems like a tiring one; classes, holding meetings and fighting for his friends at any time. Almost anyone would wonder how to keep up with such a demanding schedule! The very simple answer is that Mikey will take absolutely every chance he has to turn a blind eye.

In addition to being unstoppable on the battlefield, Mikey also has the uncanny ability to fall asleep almost anywhere. In the morning, Mikey has to be woken up by Dragons before he goes to school to sleep (which he calls ‘charging’) during all his classes. After dinner during the school lunchtime shifts, he takes another nap during the lunch break. Then Mikey rides Dragons around town on his motorcycle and manages some Toman business late at night before going to bed and repeating his unusual cycle again.

4 He is quite a talented motorcycle mechanic

Not only can Mikey ride a motorcycle, he also knows how to fix and assemble one! As a young boy, Mikey had a close relationship with his older brother, Shinichiro. Shinichiro was a skilled mechanic and even had his own bike shop, SS MOTOR.

Mikey apparently spent a lot of time with his brother at his bike shop and eventually learned the best tips and tricks for motorcycle mechanics. Mikey eventually spent enough time in his older brother’s shop and learned how to adjust, assemble and repair bicycles on his own.

Hopefully big brother Shinichiro is proud of him!

3 His name has a meaningful translation

Mikey’s name has a powerful meaning and isn’t just there to add to his cool dude character. Mikey’s first name Manjiro can be translated into “ten thousand” (man), “next” (ji) and “son” (ro). This probably refers to his incredible strength and how he possesses the manpower of several men at once. Meanwhile, his nickname Mikey roughly translates to “who’s like God,” again referring to his status as Toman’s unstoppable member.

His surname Sano can be translated into “help” or “aid” (sa), and “field, wilderness” (no). This may refer to Mikey’s wild and unpredictable side and how despite his brute strength, Mikey still needs the help and support of his close friends during hardships.

2 He hates spicy food

Mikey is often described as “childish” or “childish” and his friends are right! Mikey’s childish charm even extends to his culinary taste. Besides his sweet tooth, Mikey (like many kids) doesn’t like spicy food.

Aside from his beloved dorayaki and taiyaki, Mikey also likes another traditional dish called omurice, which is essentially an omelette and fried rice, usually topped with ketchup. Omurice is not only served with something spicy, but it is also widely known as a popular children’s dish in Japan.

1 Despite his popularity, fans don’t want to date him!

Japan loves its popularity polls for its anime characters and to see who is fan favorite and which characters need more time to win over viewers. Despite Mikey’s immense popularity and essentially the face of Tokyo Revengers (even with Takemichi as the main character of the series), Mikey was ranked number one of the worst boyfriends in the series! As if that wasn’t enough, he was also number two in the top three worst husbands!

Mikey might be a heartthrob for the Tokyo Revengers fandom, but they manage to admire him from a distance as he can be a little more than a handful at times.
