pokemon is an ever-expanding franchise, adding more games, characters, types, regions, and most importantly, more sweet, tough creatures known as pokemon. With this endlessly expanding knowledge and even remakes of games originally released years earlier, there are sure to be repetitions in certain lore decisions made earlier in the series.

Pokemon is generally not a self-contradictory series, it has a very linear, straightforward concept and builds on it mainly by expanding the world. With each new region, there are new characters, creatures, and knowledge that are exclusive to that region in the world of Pokemon. However, with the series running for nearly thirty years, there are a handful of retcons that have built up with each new addition to the world of Pokemon.

6 The Pokemon world is no longer part of the real world

pokemon red, Blue, and Yellow made it clear that the world of Pokemon was an extension of the real world. There are plenty of regions that are heavily inspired by or based on real places, but the Kanto region was created as a fictional representation of the real Kanto in Japan. This is evident from the many references to real-world concepts such as war, religion, countries, and animals scattered throughout the games.

Slowly, these references have been removed from the real world, probably due to the fact that expanding the world of Pokemon and keeping the canon of being a part of the real world is a tough box to keep the franchise in. These changes include Parasect’s Pokemon Stadium Pokedex’s listing is changed from saying its “spores are sometimes used as medicine in China,” and Lt. Vermillion City’s Surge Is No Longer American.

5 New Pokemon types just exist

Every new mechanic in the games generally has a familiar explanation behind it. Like ride Pokemon exclusive to Alola, Wishing Stars that power the energy used for Dynamaxing in pokemon sword and shield, and the Mega Stones are created by the energy radiated by the legendary Pokemon Yveltal and Xerneas in Kalos.

However, there is never any lore explanation as to why new Pokemon types are being added. They just appear and change the types of Pokemon that previously had only one type, such as Magnemite who became an electric/steel type after the inclusion of dark and steel types in Pokemon Gold & Silver, and the evolution lines of Ralts and Mime Jr. became psychic/fairy after fairy typing was introduced in Pokemon X & Y. The knowledge behind new types and the changes in other Pokemon types never worked out, mostly just wiped out with the note that new discoveries are constantly being made.

4 Oak lied about the Pokedex

It has become canon from the release of Pokemon Legends Arceus that Professor Oak is a liar. In Pokemon Legends Arceus, which predates the events of Pokemon Red & Blue over the centuries, Professor Laventon introduces the player to his invention and passion project: The Pokedex.

In particular, Professor Oak takes credit for inventing the Pokedex when the player first encounters it inGeneration I. Since it’s clear that the Pokedex was an idea that predated Professor Oak’s existence, it’s a little odd that he confidently takes credit for inventing the Pokedex, when it’s now been revealed that it long before the events of Pokemon Red and Blue.

3 Sinnoh became Hisui

Although the lore in Pokemon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum was not as elaborated as players would have liked, it was never said that the Sinnoh region had been renamed in the past. When it was unveiled in Pokemon Legends Arceus that the Sinnoh region had existed for centuries before the events of . Hisui was called pokemon diamond, pearl and platinum, it left players a bit confused.

Not to mention that “Sinnoh” refers to a deity rather than a region anywhere Pokemon Legends Arceus. The renaming of the region in the past and the move from Sinnoh being referred to as the name of a deity rather than the region itself is considered a huge recent lore in the franchise.

2 Real world references in Pokedex listings

The real world references in the world of Pokemon have dwindled over the years. While a handful of references were placed in the NPC-character dialogue, many of the real references came from entries in Generation I’s Pokedex.

Raichu’s Pokedex entry used to say it was strong enough to electrocute an Indian elephant, but has since changed to say it can take out a Copperajah. Likewise, Ponyta’s Pokedex entries in Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon FireRed claim it can erase the Eiffel Tower and Ayers Rock respectively in one jump. Legendary Pokemon have also had real-world references, as Mew is said to have originally been found in the jungles of the South American country of Guyana.

1 Giovanni’s Return in Gen II

After Giovanni, the leader of the evil organization Team Rocket, is defeated by the main character in Pokemon Red & Blue, he disbands Team Rocket and reverses the decision to dedicate his life to studying Pokemon. One of ‘s biggest plot points Pokemon Gold & Silver, like Pokemon Heart Gold & Soul Silver, are the remnants of Team Rocket trying to reconnect with their old leader.

Canonically, these messages are of no avail, as Giovanni never responds or returns to help Team Rocket. However, an event in Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver confirms that Giovanni heard the radio broadcasts of Team Rocket trying to contact him, but never returned because he was defeated by the protagonist. During the development of the original Pokemon Gold & Silver, there were plans to give Giovanni a good return outside of an event planned in the remakes. Originally conceived as a member of the Gen II Elite Four, his sprite could even be found in the Radio Tower, implying that he might have responded to Team Rocket’s messages in some way.
