The next iteration of Saint’s Row is finally ready to arrive on August 23, and fans have been waiting for it for nearly a decade. The series has always been underrated, thanks to frequent comparisons to the Grand Theft Auto games, but it has secured a loyal base of fans who love the series and consider it extraordinary.
But Saint’s Row isn’t the only game that’s been waiting a long time for a sequel. There are many games that have been almost completely forgotten over the years or at least never got that expected follow-up. Still, while not nearly as popular as they used to be, these underrated games still deserve a shot.
Lost Odyssey
After a group of immortals arrive in another world with missing memories and a world full of magic all around them, the player must help the main immortals discover the secrets of their lost memories. Lost Odyssey was centered around a brilliant and inventive concept that kept gamers constantly enthralled.
“One of the best JRPGs of all time,” Firvulag says on Reddit. But despite being an incredible game, rumors of a sequel never materialized. While the game left room for further exploration of magic in the new world, fans were unable to return to their immortal shoes, which was a major disappointment.
the saboteur
Considered one of the best open-world PlayStation 3 games, the saboteur Set in World War II in Paris, it followed a race car driver desperately trying to liberate France from Nazi forces. The game combined elements of different genres from car games to action adventures to the open world which made exploration incredible.
“Great sense of mischief. Nice soundtrack. Killing Nazis and race cars. Interesting challenges with meaningful rewards,” said Reddit user whooo_me. But what the game couldn’t boast of was the presence of a sequel. While it would certainly have been hard to match the setting, there are other locations it could have used from World War II, and a sequel could have even seen a Berlin uprising.
Jade Rich
In one of BioWare’s best games, Jade Rich saw players choose different martial arts skills, before defending an empire against monsters across the empire. “This game was absolutely beautiful and had one of the best soundtracks I’d ever heard,” says Redditor Hot_Marrionberry_4685. “Combined with the combat system and the incredible story with its plot twists, it was a masterpiece.”
But while the game has sparked much debate over the years, Jade Rich never seen a sequel. The game constantly reinforced that the Empire would fall soon, but players never actually saw it happen. Should one ever come, gamers can finally see what the gods have promised them about the collapse of the empire.
Enslaved: Odyssey To The West
Although fans have forgotten about this Xbox 360 game, Enslaved: Odyssey To The West had players explore a world where machines rule everything and humans struggle for survival. “It plays pretty well because the game had elements and mechanics that were way ahead of its time,” says Redditor Witcherbob671. “Oh and having Andy Serkis was a nice surprise.”
The game never got a sequel, thanks to poor sales that collapsed the planned follow-up. While the graphics were incredible and the world inventive, the gameplay was mostly mediocre, leading to a somewhat tiring experience. In any case, the essence of the game was continued by the remarkably similar Horizon Zero Dawn.
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
With a protagonist who can easily remind players of the X-Man Cable, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy has been largely forgotten over the years. The game was a standard shooter, but elements of telekinesis and other powers helped set it apart – though sadly not enough to continue the underrated game.
“Great game, ready for a sequel… and nobody heard from it after that. It literally ends with ‘to be continued’. Come on,” Redditor Solomaxwell6. While it was certainly poised for a sequel, copyright legal issues and the eventual collapse of Midway Games marked the end of the Psi-Ops series, a huge disappointment for fans looking forward to the next iteration.
black
A game that does its best to mimic standard Black-Ops movies, black was a pretty underrated PlayStation 2 game that fans were eager to see more of. “It was one of the most engaging and challenging FPS of its time, and it still is for me,” said this user on Reddit.
While the game was expected to have a sequel, and had a spiritual successor in Death tollEA withdrew the support of the studio, Criterion, and put an end to their hopes. So while it’s been forgotten over the years, there was a real chance of an entire franchise that never materialized.
Dante’s Inferno
A hack-and-slash game that’s a bit too similar to god of war, Dante’s Inferno never managed the long-term franchise success that managed its inspiration. While the concept of a journey through the nine layers of hell was compelling, the sequel never materialized.
“Of god of war going the 3rd person action-narrative route, there is certainly room for that Dante’s Inferno to return,” says TheDaileyGamer on Reddit. Unfortunately, although the game certainly leaves room for an adaptation of Alighieri’s Purgatorio with its end, the studio closed a few years later, and it’s unlikely the IP will ever be picked up.
Alpha protocol
While it didn’t get the universal acclaim that some other underrated titles did, Alpha protocol still had his fans. The immersiveness of the interactive story really took advantage of the interactive elements of video games, which have proven to thrive in the medium.
“The game was clunky for sure, but no other comparable RPG/shooter has let me freeze the time for 10 seconds to land 2 (non-lethal) headshots at anyone within a 10-mile radius without leaving cover,” says Redditor Foltogulus . “Ultimate James Bond Simulator.” Unfortunately, the game didn’t sell well at all, and all plans for a sequel were subsequently shelved.
bullet storm
A game that especially encouraged creativity, bullet storm excited fans with his creative combat system and his rewards for more creative kills. But despite near-universal acclaim, the game never evolved into a franchise, and the potential for a sequel remains untapped.
“bullet storm ended on such a big cliffhanger, I wish we’d get a sequel,” said Reddit user Leading_Middle. Unfortunately, the studio deemed the game a failure due to unexpectedly poor sales, making it incredibly unlikely to see the light of day from another day.
Sunset Overdrive
With its light-hearted tone and emphasis on agility and traversal, Sunset Overdrive was a unique experience that left fans wanting more before the match was over. “It’s one of the most fun games I’ve ever played,” said Reddit user dcwinger12.
Unfortunately, despite its great success, the game has not found a sequel. Fans of the colorful environments and fast-paced action have urged Insomniac to develop it, but the success of games like Marvel’s Spider-Man probably delayed the studio because resources have shifted.
