Sometimes even the best video games have one thing that just doesn’t work. Often that one thing is a particularly annoying enemy. From dark souls’ skeleton wheels on Morrowind’s cliffracers, some enemies can drag their entire games down.

Since the recently announced Star Wars: Jedi Survivor brings with it the threat of a return of the dreaded Oggdo Bogdo, it stirs up the discussion of other foes that fans despise. Whether unnecessarily difficult, unfairly designed, or just plain annoying, these were terrible enemies in otherwise great games.

10 Djinn – Uncharted 3

The first three not mapped games all had some sort of supernatural twist in the third act, to a mixed reception from fans. One of the last stages in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception pitted Nate against hallucinated Djinn, evil fire spirits.

The Djinn play the same way as regular enemies, but they have a few extra abilities that make them difficult to fight. Not only can they throw instant-kill projectiles, but the Djinn can also teleport into the area and damage Nate if he gets too close. Add to that the fact that they can deal about three times as much damage as normal enemies, and Djinn can make players wish they had lost this lost city.

9 Banshees – Mass Effect 3

Mass effect 3 is easily the most underrated of the original trilogy, hampered only by the controversial ending. However, the combat was a huge improvement over previous entries, which was necessary because Mass effect 3 also introduced the dreaded Banshees.

The Reaper-corrupted Asari, the banshees were hulking enemies who could soak up damage like tanks and recover quickly. They can unleash a variety of devastating energy attacks and can kill players in one fell swoop if caught in their clutches. Their infamous cry scared even the bravest of players.

8 Brutes – The Last of Us part 2

In terms of gameplay, the Seraphite brutes fought on The last of us part 2 are not bad enemies. They are not unfair and even lead to several great fights during the game. The problem lies in how they fit into the world of the game.

The last of us is meant to be a much more grounded and serious story than something like not mapped, but the brutes make it feel very much like a video game. The colossal enemies can withstand direct headshots and point-blank shotgun blasts. If they were wearing armor or had some other in-game statement it would make more sense, but having regular human enemies that can just tank bullets like this kind of detracts from the game’s intended realism.

7 Cougars – Red Dead Redemption Series

Cougars are often apex predators in the wild, so it should be quite a challenge to meet one in every game. This is definitely the case in both Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2as cougars are easily the most terrifying thing players will encounter in the open world of the game.

In the original Red Dead RedemptionCougars are fast, tough and can easily tear players apart. They got even worse in the second game and became even more agile fighters who can and will kill Arthur in one go. Even worse is the legendary white cougar, who must be hunted through a dark, maze-like cave in a test of patience rather than hunting skill.

6 The Muspelheim Valkyrie – God of War

Each of the Valkyries in the groundbreaking 2018 god of war reboot is meant to be an ultimate challenge for the player. They’re tough, deadly bosses that almost require mastery of the game to take down, although for the most part it’s still all fair fights.

However, Gondul, the Valkyrie found in Muspelheim as the last challenge, is a different story. Gondul is already arguably the hardest of the regular Valkyries, able to use most of the attacks the others use. What aggravates Gondul, however, is that many of the attacks now leave a lingering lake of fire on the ground. Since the Valkyrie battles require constant movement and lightning reflexes, players can easily get stuck in a fire that was unavoidable. Gondul may not be completely dishonest, but she comes pretty close.

5 Malboros – Final Fantasy Series

An often literal long-term scourge Final Fantasy series since the second game, Malboros are notorious among the game’s enemies for one simple thing, their ‘bad breath’ attack. This single move makes Malboros more hated than many of the fan-favorite fans Final Fantasy bosses.

Enemies can inflict a number of status effects on party members, such as poison, confusion, paralysis, and many more. With bad breath, a Malboro can inflict several on an entire party, and sometimes all of them. Confronting a Malboro only to irreparably hinder the party with his first attack can dampen the strategic gameplay the series is known for.

4 Cobra Tanks – Batman: Arkham Knight

One of the main complaints about Batman: Arkham Knight was his over-reliance on the polarizing new Batmobile. While the game perfected the series’ regular combat, players were limited to the tank-like vehicle for much of the game. While it’s great fun for a while, in the end it remains his welcome.

In addition to the regular drone battles, players will often have to deal with cobra tanks, heavily armored tanks with only one weak point. The battles turn into a hide-and-seek where players must slowly outsmart the Cobras to get behind them. These battles slow the game to a crawl and are more annoying than exciting. It’s a tough job to disappoint the Batmobile, but somehow Cobra tanks managed to do it.

3 Cazadores – Fallout Series

For many long time precipitation players, the mere mention of Cazadores is probably enough to send shivers down their spines. More than the dreaded Claws of Death, Cazadores are harbingers of death everywhere New Vegas.

Wasps are bad enough, but when they inflate to the size of a large dog and have stings that cause permanent venom damage, it adds up to eleven hours. Cazadores are lightning fast, travel in swarms and are remarkably resilient. Their high damage output and persistent venom means an encounter on higher difficulties will almost certainly result in the death of companions or players.

2 Lady Comstock – Bioshock Infinite

The Bioshock The strengths of the series have always been in the fantastic atmosphere of the games and in the complex stories they weave. Their strength, unfortunately, does not lie in boss fights. After Frank Fontaine let fans down with his final boss fight in the first game, many hoped the threequel Bioshock Infinite would learn from his mistakes.

unfortunately endless pitted players against Lady Comstock, possibly the toughest and most reviled boss in the entire franchise. Lady Comstock is a huge bullet sponge and can raise any killed enemy from the dead. One fight with her is enough of a slog, but players will have to fight her three times throughout the game.

1 Cursed Prowlers/Screechers/Spirits – DOOM Eternal

DOOM Eternal is full of varied and fun demons, and with the game’s excellent fast traversal, ripping and tearing it had never been better. For some reason, however, in the Ancient Gods expansions, the developers decided to add several enemies that destroyed some of the funniest aspects of the game.

Ghosts are said to possess demons and make them significantly stronger. They also prevented players from destroying weaknesses, one of the game’s greatest innovations, and could only be killed by a single unpopular weapon mod in a short period of time. Screechers would buff any demon nearby to near invincible if damaged in the slightest. While these two can be defended, cursed prowlers are almost universally hated. Cursed Prowlers would poison players, taking damage over time, then teleport as far as possible, forcing players to chase them in a slowed state, killing them solely with bloodshot, which may or may not be charged. As phenomenal as DOOM Eternal is, some of his new enemies just weren’t fun.
