With the Predator’s triumphant return to the cinema in the recent hit film Prey, fans of the franchise may be eager to enter the exciting world of the film. Video games have come a long way in mimicking the thrilling action of movies, and some great games have a similar tone to the new movie.
From dinosaur survival games like Dino Crisis to chilling horror thrillers like Alien: Isolationsome games capture the cat-and-mouse atmosphere of Prey. While many games are similar to the movie, only the best are worth picking up and will give gamers a truly exhilarating experience.
Friday the 13th (2017)
Jason Voorhees’s slasher exploits have graced video games before, but he’s never been so well executed as in Friday the 13th. In the arena style game, players either play as counselors or as the infamous assassin himself, and they must complete a series of tasks within a time limit to win the game.
Like the Predator in Prey, Voorhees is an almost unstoppable enemy and you need all the wits and skills of the player to defeat him. In addition to the survival horror aspects, gamers who play as Jason get the chance to turn the tables on their opponents and commit mind-blowing kills.
Alien vs Predator (1999)
Based on the comic book series of the same name, Alien vs Predator pit the archenemies against each other with the space marines in the middle. The game takes control of one of the three factions and features three separate campaigns, each with different goals and objectives.
The FPS nature of the game makes it a gripping experience to advance, and each faction has its own strengths and weaknesses. On top of the survival horror, the game’s action is exciting and fast-paced, rivaling some of the scariest video games of the 90s.
Dino Crisis (1999)
Like a mix between Jurassic Park and demisethe classic survival horror game Dino Crisis is a thrilling experience with a terrifying twist. A team of special agents tries to find a rogue scientist on a remote island and come face to face with prehistoric monsters.
Renowned for its advanced gameplay, Dino Crisis is still a product of its time when it comes to a fixed camera angle and somewhat clunky controls. Apart from that, the original character of the game is reminiscent of: Preyand the player always feels a bit helpless when fighting the many dinosaurs in the game.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (2020)
Generally considered one of the best Resident Evil games of all time, the third installment in the series added a new twist to the formula. Two special agents must escape the confines of Raccoon City while a virus outbreak turns its inhabitants into dangerous zombies.
In addition to the usual missions and enemies, the player is constantly chased by Nemesis, a dangerous villain who is out to destroy them. The sudden appearances of Nemesis give the player the feeling of being hunted, and there is constant danger at every moment. Whether the player enjoys the original or the remake, both games deliver the same sensational terror.
Alien: Isolation (2014)
Like the Predator series of movies, the Alien franchise has had its fair share of great games as well. Alien: Isolation follows Amanda Ripley, the daughter of the film’s protagonist, as she explores the outer reaches of space and comes face to face with a deadly Xenomorph.
By not giving the player a way to defend themselves, the game burdens them with using stealth and strategy to avoid being swallowed up. This makes the gameplay experience downright gruesome and it’s the perfect game for players who don’t get scared easily. Like Naru in Preyit’s a battle of brains versus brawn in a fight for survival.
Monster Hunter (2004)
If the Predator is more up to the player’s liking, then the underrated classic Monster Hunter is more their speed. The game casts the player as a new monster hunter who must traverse the landscape to complete missions killing or capturing mythical monsters.
Like the Predator’s intergalactic sport yachts, the missions in Monster Hunter include all kinds of finesse to complete. While killing beasts is the primary objective, some missions involve collecting items or taking samples alive rather than dead. While the game is known to be punishingly difficult, it has a devoted fanbase that loves the challenge.
Hunting: Showdown (2019)
although Hunt: Showdown features two different game modes, it’s the “Bounty Hunt” mode which is perfect for a Prey fanatic. In the game, the user takes control of a bounty hunter who is dropped into the most remote parts of the wilderness to kill and claim the bounty of a mythical beast.
Alone or in pairs, the player must use his cunning to pinpoint the location of the beast, and it takes everything to defeat it before it defeats the player. Due to the steep difficulty level and online component, gamers can enjoy hours of fun with the game.
Far Cry Primal (2016)
Though not necessarily in the same vein as Prey, Far Cry Primal was a sharp left turn for the franchise and introduced prehistoric survival elements. The user takes control of Takkar, a young member of the tribe who is slowly gaining importance in the community with their ability to tame animals.
Everything and everyone is an enemy in the game, and everyday survival is just as much of a concern as traditional combat. Going against enemies that are much bigger than reminds the player of the dynamics of Preyand the game offers a variety of challenges that keep the gameplay fresh.
Turok (1997)
Generally regarded as one of the best dinosaur games of all time, Turok mixed elements of science fiction and fantasy in its action. The player takes control of Turok, a Native American warrior, and travels back in time to prevent the evil Campaigner from breaking the barrier between realms.
Exploring the primordial world of the game will delight the fans of Prey, and there is a certain wildness between the two pieces of media. The FPS elements are fluid for a 90s game, and the variety of dinosaur and alien enemies keeps the player captivated as they work their way through the story.
Predator: Hunting Ground (2020)
While the Predator was mostly seen in games with its nemesis the Xenomorph, Predator: Hunting Grounds turn the classic character into a modern game of its own. The multiplayer game casts the player as either a mercenary or as the Predator himself, with a team having to complete a certain mission before time runs out.
Playing as the team of mercenaries is an exciting experience, and the variety of different tasks ensures that things don’t become redundant. As the Predator, however, the game excels at bringing the experience of the film series to life like never before. As with any online multiplayer game, the experience is largely based on the other players, but the gameplay is almost always top notch.
