Of all the classes present in video games, such as assassins and hunters, thieves have perhaps the most diverse characters of all. After all, there are so many things to steal in so many different worlds, it’s no surprise that players are treated to a wide variety of sticky thieves.
Some thieves are not only better at their jobs than others, but also better at leaving a lasting impression on the players they encounter. Whether it’s those who appear as sole side characters, boosting the main character’s growth, or thieves who appear as exciting protagonists themselves, thieves are definitely in a class of their own.
10 Mélie fought hardships (A Plague Tale: Innocence)
Mélie works with her brother Arthur and is a young thief with a special fondness for lock-picking in A plague story: innocence. In a desperate attempt to escape their abusive father, Mélie and Arthur ran away together, but soon found themselves over their heads, which was the moment when they decided to use their natural talents to become successful thieves.
Unfortunately, Mélie loses her brother during the game, which only makes her more determined to help protagonist Amicia defeat the Inquisition. However, Mélie was never the same after Arthur’s death, and despite the end of the plague and the world seemingly returning to relative peace, she chose to leave the group to live a life of solitude instead.
9 Styx is one of a kind, (the Styx series)
The video game series Styx follows the adventures of the titular character, a goblin who has access to arcane abilities that help him succeed in his goals of looting, looting and stealing. 8 Brynjolf is the introduction to the Thieves Guild (Skyrim)
After the treacherous guild master Mercer Frey, Brynjolf is one of the main thief characters that the main character in Skyrim. Unlike Frey, Brynjolf stays loyal to his guild and even accompanies the Dragonborn on their quest to become a nightingale, become one himself, and join the protagonist in protecting Nocturnal.
While there are many brilliant characters in the Thieves Guild, Brynjolf is just a nice guy, despite his profession. He is a strong supporter of the protagonist and pleads for them multiple times, with Brynjolf being the one nominating them for the position of guild master at the end of the quest. Sometimes, when it comes to theft, it feels good to run into a stand-up character.
7 Yuna Saves the Life of Jin Sakai (Ghost Of Tsushima)
The woman who is solely responsible for Jin Sakai’s life to see the events of Ghost of TsushimaYuna is a skilled thief, a devoted sister and, as the events of the game show, an impossibly invaluable ally. Not only does she save Jin at the start of the game, but she does so again at the beginning of the third act, causing the pair to rely on each other.
Independent and indomitable, Yuna does not hesitate to continue the work she and Jin did together before he was captured. Although Yuna doesn’t like being connected to anything, she puts her trust in Jin early on and the two develop a very meaningful bond, one that takes the already emotional story to the next level.
6 Joker leads a merry band of thieves (Persona 5)
While the Phantom Thieves heists aren’t technically real, that doesn’t mean protagonist Joker doesn’t show off some particularly useful thief skills over the course of the game. An expert in not only combat, but also parkour, the enemies don’t stand a chance when it comes to their palaces being infiltrated by Joker and his merry band of thieves.
Though he is voiceless, Joker, just like the others Persona protagonists, still manages to maintain a fairly humorous personality through his interactions with the other Phantom Thieves and his various social ties, which, despite his silence, still makes him likable.
5 Kasumi Goto has a tragic past (Mass Effect 2)
Kasumi is recruited in Mass Effect 2 after Shepard agrees to steal a gray box from a man named Donovan Hock. In her quarters, most of Kasumi’s possessions can be used to gain more insight into her character, and combined with her personal mission, Kasumi reveals that she has much more depth than her sharp wit and casual demeanor might suggest at first glance.
By the time Kasumi ends up in Shepard’s company, she’s lost the one person in the world who was truly important to her. Despite her playful demeanor and mysterious demeanor, Kasumi proves to the players and the team that she is only human.
4 Garrett is the original sneak (thief)

Never seen, never heard, and with no name associated with him, La Volpe was a ghost.
La Volpe also wasn’t afraid to withdraw any benefits he might have given if his instincts had told him to. While I’m convinced Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood that there was a traitor in the Italian order, he refused to cooperate with them, instead waiting for Ezio to bring him proof as to who the real traitor was. La Volpe survived not only on his skills, but also on his smart decision-making and powerful gut feeling.
2 Yuffie Kisaragi Makes A Sparkling Departure From Usual Thieves (Final Fantasy VII Intergrade)
Yuffie is the gung-ho ninja and thief that the party can randomly encounter in the forest in the original Final Fantasy VIIor is introduced to the player through her infiltration of Shinra in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Both times, Yuffie’s bubbly, loud, and optimistic personality shines through, especially when compared to the rest of the cast.
Yuffie, a rebellious resident of Wutai Village, is annoyed that the village had to become a resort after the war, becoming a caricature of his former proud self and retaining little of his former culture. This conflict bonds Yuffie with the rest of the party as they help her reconcile with her father and set out on her own journey.
1 Sly Raccoon was destined for this (Sly Raccoon)
Sly comes from a long line of master thieves, who were told at the age of eight that he was destined to follow in their footsteps. Despite being orphaned not long after, Sly met his best friends Bentley and Murray at his orphanage, both of whom were more than happy to help Sly fulfill his legacy.
Sly is charming, charismatic and quick-witted. Not only is the dialogue in the Sly Cooper series brilliant, but it’s also incredibly funny and always well delivered by Sly in particular. The raccoon also shows depth to his character, he has a lot of regrets about what happened to Bentley and has a long and complicated relationship with Carmelita Fox.
