Sometimes the food in video games can look so delicious it’s hard to believe it’s nothing more than a bunch of pixels. But it’s not always about how the food looks. Food themed levels have been around for generations and even 32 bit food levels have brought a sense of fun and joy.
Video games allow gamers to experience fantasies of exploring a world made up entirely of food. The creativity of food themed levels is often high as developers are tasked with taking objects and shapes from the real world and implementing them into a level that is as fun to play as it is to look at.
10 Poochy’s Sweet Run has a smorgasbord of treats (Yoshi’s Crafted World)
The second level of Pastel Pathway in Yoshi’s Made World is sure to have gamers reaching for a glass of milk. It sees Mario’s faithful companion making his way through a land full of confectionery.
There is a wide variety of foods, from muffins to macarons to marshmallows, which are used as platforms, wells and dominoes. Even Yoshi’s friend Poochy pops out of a cupcake. It is a level full of charm, and although the food is made from artisanal materials, it does not look any less delicious.
9 Sweet Sweet Canyon looks good enough to eat (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe)
Sweet Sweet Canyon is based on Rocky Road, a level in Super Mario Galaxy, but it’s much bigger, and there’s quite a bit more to it. There are windmills made of wafers, donut tunnels, a soda waterfall, and a gingerbread man crowd, just to name a few.
It’s a cute, well-designed track, and while it’s likely that just breathing the sweet sweet canyon air will lead to tooth decay, it’s hard not to get distracted from the race by all the delicious-looking food.
8 The land of chocolate makes us want to go to Fudgetown (The Simpsons Game)
This level is based on the iconic scene from The Simpsons cartoon in which Homer fantasizes about frolicking through a land of chocolate. The level is more fleshed out than the cartoon version and has Homer chasing down a white chocolate rabbit while fighting regular chocolate rabbits.
After reaching the top of a giant chocolate cake, Homer can turn into Homer Ball and go inside. He then rolls around in the cake crushing chocolate bunnies and laughing maniacally before waking from his dream.
7 Sweets Land is heaven for candy lovers (The Castle Of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse)
The remake of Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse allows players to experience Sweets Land in 3D. When Mickey enters a milk bottle in the library, he is transported to a world full of dessert foods. There he meets a dragon made of red licorice that tries to stop his progress.
All kinds of candies are used in creative ways throughout the level. There are gummy dolphins, large jello cubes that Mickey can move through and a waterfall of melted ice with falling macarons.
6 Candy Chateau is a level worth enjoying (Rayman)
The original Rayman on the PlayStation was one of the first major platform games of its generation. Candy Chateau is interesting because it is the last level in the game. Normally food themed levels are somewhere in the middle of a game, perhaps because there is a touch of frivolity about them, but this level went against that trend before there was one.
In the level, Rayman sees his way through a frozen landscape under an ominous purple sky. It starts with him sliding onto a frying pan, then more traditional platforming ensues through the nougat and chocolate laden level.
5 Juicy Jungle is a juicy abode (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze)
Donkey Kong has a strong association with food, given his penchant for hoarding bananas in his own personal banana cave. The fifth world of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze let Donkey and the gang venture through a lush, fruit-filled jungle.
Since food-themed levels are often filled with sweets and desserts, it’s nice to have a fruit-based level. Although the factory that pumps juice and popsicles makes it a little less healthy. The level design, as with the rest of the game, is top notch.
4 Sweets Park is full of delectable treats (Kirby’s Epic Yarn)
Sweets Park is the fourth level of Treat Land, and Kirby makes his way through squishy pudding and platforms over spinning donuts, as well as tons of frosting. The treasures are also food-related, with a Donut Pillow and Dessert Dresser to be found.
Everything about this level, from the art direction to the music, makes for a pleasant foray into a land of sweet treats. While no one wants to eat anything made of yarn in real life, the food at this level looks good enough to eat.
3 Sugarland Shimmy is a drooling scuffle (Cuphead)
Sugarland Shimmy sees Cuphead take on Baroness Von Bon Bon. Three of the five food-themed mini-bosses play into battle, including a floating jaw crusher who tries to eat Cuphead. There’s also a giant piece of candy corn, a waffle, a gumball machine, and a cupcake.
The mini bosses appear in random order each time, with the cupcake, Muffsky Chernikov, not appearing in easy mode. Once Cuphead is past the three stages, Baroness Von Bon Bon finally takes matters into her own hands. The background is a beautifully rendered landscape of candies that are sure to make gamers salivate while fighting.
2 Luncheon Kingdom is a quirky chef’s paradise (Super Mario Odyssey)
Inspired by Vesuvius, Luncheon Kingdom is arguably the most unique-looking level in Super Mario Odyssey. The neon color palette gives the level a vibrancy that sets it apart from any other level. It’s also one of the quirkiest levels in the game.
There are gigantic pieces of food lying around, a pot that boils on a volcano and a gigantic slab of meat resting on a perch high above the kingdom. There is also a cooking carnival and the inhabitants of the kingdom are pieces of cutlery.
1 Sweet Mountain Zone is a planet-sized buffet (Sonic Colors Ultimate)
Sweet Mountain Zone consists of 6 acts and a boss. Each level contains, as the name implies, mountains of food. Giant ice creams, burgers stacked in the air, candycane grind rails and more are all built on a foundation of cake. It is the work of Dr. Eggman, who was presumably unhappy with a few cafes for his interstellar amusement park.
Instead, he went for a whole planet of confectionery. Using the Drill ability, Sonic can work his way through layers of banana and jelly bean filled cake. Possibly the largest food-themed area in a video game, at least theoretically.
