A reader worries that Sony’s poor communication is getting worse when it comes to the remake of the original The last of us.
Sony has received a lot of criticism this year for their poor communication. This is often dismissed by some fans as people who are entitled to and don’t appreciate the problems the pandemic has caused. At first I mostly agreed with this – I’m the first to admit that I get carried away with wanting to know about the next big games – but as the weeks and months went by I started to think that there really is a serious problem.
Refusing to hold a real E3 event was a big mistake in my opinion. Microsoft also didn’t have much to show for it, but they tried their best and I think they were well appreciated for it. They didn’t show Fable of Avowed or any of their most anticipated games, but there were very few complaints because I think people appreciated that they did what they could in difficult circumstances.
Sony didn’t, though, and while that’s not the end of the world, it’s still a small sign against them. And not what you want when you run into real problems like The Last Of Us Part 1.
Remaking the first The Last Of Us has so many problems that I don’t want to waste time discussing them all because they are so well known. But in short, there’s the price, the fact that the original still looks and plays good, the price, the fact that it’s wasting Naughty Dog’s time while they still haven’t announced a real new game, the price , and finally, the price.
£70 for a completely unnecessary, time-wasting remake is madness and I can’t believe Sony isn’t seeing this. It’s not even a matter of ‘Well, if you don’t want to pay for it, don’t buy it’, it’s the principle. This game shouldn’t exist, it’s a terrible multi-level idea and this week we learn that there are even more problems than previously thought.
Naughty Dog has repeatedly said that the gameplay will be improved, which for most people meant swapping the mechanics of part 2. It’s not necessary, no one asked for it, but at least it shows that they are doing everything they can for the remake. And yet, leaks and rumors repeatedly say that nothing has actually changed in the gameplay.
Just this week, Naughty Dog said that “the gameplay mechanics would be rebuilt,” a phrase specifically constructed as vaguely as possible. What does it mean and why, since they just released a 10-minute gameplay video, they didn’t show exactly what they meant?
That’s what I mean by bad communication. Sony is starting to come across as incompetent or deliberately deceitful and I don’t know which is worse.
There is absolutely nothing ambiguous about the word gameplay and yet I get the clear impression that Sony and Naughty Dog will eventually pretend having framerate options counts as changing the way the game is played.
These are dangerous times for Sony. Microsoft is on the rise and Sony only seems to have one big new game nearing completion (God Of War Ragnarök – which they’ve only been showing off once). The last thing they needed, just when people are starting to see their trust in them falter, is an overpriced waste of their top developer’s time.
If they haven’t changed the gameplay, just say so. If that multiplayer game is a live service title, just say so. If they run out of games until next summer or anytime, just say so. Don’t say anything and don’t lie. The Last Of Us Part 1 is the last game Sony needs right now, in several ways.
