Since season one, Will Byers has been a complex character who never seemed to fit in. Now, Weird stuff star Noah Schnapp shares why and confirms what fans have long suspected.

Weird stuff season 4 clearly hinted that Will Byers was gay and has feelings for Mike Wheeler. Many fans were angry that Weird stuff danced around Will Byers’ sexuality, but now Schnapp has said, “It’s 100% clear he’s gay and he loves Mike.”

In a recent interview with Variety, Schnapp discussed his character’s sexuality and how the arc has evolved slowly over the show’s current four seasons. “It’s pretty clear this season that Will has feelings for Mike,” he said. “They’ve deliberately brought that up over the past few seasons. Even in season one they hinted at that and slowly, slowly that storyline grew. I think for season four I played this character who loves his best friend but struggles with knowing if he will be accepted or not and feels a mistake and like he doesn’t belong Will has always felt this way All his friends they all have girlfriends and they all fit into their different clubs Will never really have a place anywhere found it.”

Schnapp continued to talk about how much he appreciates the way the Duffer brothers developed Will’s arc throughout the series and how important the character is to representation. “I think it’s so beautifully done because it’s so easy to make a character look like it’s suddenly gay,” he said. “People have come up to me – I was just in Paris and this guy, about 40 years old, came up to me and he said, ‘Wow, this Will character made me feel good. And I dealt with it so much That’s exactly who I was when I was a kid.” That made me so happy to hear. They’re writing this real character and this real journey and real battle and they’re doing it so well.”

While the show itself has never confirmed Will’s sexuality, many fans have speculated and theorized that he is gay, especially after the season four release. Much of Will’s screen time revolved around a third wheel for Mike and Eleven, and many scenes were shot in such a way that it looked like Will was staring longingly at Mike. “I think it’s kind of like Mike who handles his own stuff,” Schnapp said of their friendship in Weird stuff season 4. “In season two they were best friends and they were so close, and then Mike obviously has all his eyes on Eleven. Will has to deal with a bit of jealousy there. He just wants his best friend back and wants him to to be like it was in season one, when they played D&D in his basement, but Mike is growing out of that and only cares about Eleven right now. I’m just interested to see where the Duffers go with that in season five, and how they close that storyline.”

Schnapp also shared his enthusiasm for Weird stuff season 5 and how excited he is to see where the Duffers take Will’s storyline. “They have a lot to accomplish… Obviously we’re hoping for a coming out scene, and I also want them to address this connection to the Mind Flayer and how that fits into the world,” said Schnapp. “I just want to see it all connect and work. So I’m excited to see what happens.”

Weird stuff Seasons 1-4 are now available on Netflix.
